Chapter 25 - The Document That Could Erase the Vance Dynasty

“WHAT DID MY MOTHER SIGN THE NIGHT MY FATHER DISAPPEARED?”
Alexander stood inside Evelyn Vance's private medical suite, holding the phone that had just gone silent.

Maria stood beside him.

Detective Bennett and Marcus waited near the doorway.

Evelyn sat in her wheelchair, her hands trembling beneath a soft blanket.

For twenty-two years, she had lived with the memory of the night Thomas disappeared.

She had told Alexander that his father died in an accident.

She had watched him grow into a powerful businessman.

She had watched him inherit the family empire.

And she had never told him that someone had once prepared another boy to take his place.

Alexander knelt beside her.

“Mother, please.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

He gently took her hand.

“I know Richard threatened you. I know you were frightened. But I need to understand what happened.”

Evelyn looked toward Maria.

Then toward Thomas, who stood silently near the window.

“Thomas…” she whispered.

Alexander turned toward his father.

“Do you know what she signed?”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I know there was an agreement.”

Alexander felt anger rising.

“Another agreement?”

Thomas nodded.

“It was presented after I disappeared.”

Evelyn began crying.

Alexander looked back at her.

“Mother, what did it say?”

She struggled to speak.

“Protection… Alexander.”

Bennett approached gently.

“Mrs. Vance, did someone tell you the document would protect your son?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Richard?”

Another nod.

The detective continued.

“Did you read it?”

Evelyn shook her head.

Alexander closed his eyes.

He imagined his mother twenty-two years earlier.

Her husband missing.

Her thirteen-year-old son frightened.

Richard Sterling standing in the doorway with lawyers and promises.

She had been desperate to keep Alexander safe.

And someone had exploited that desperation.

“Where is the agreement now?” Bennett asked.

Evelyn looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“Thomas… study.”

Marcus nodded.

“We've already recovered documents from the study.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not… there.”

Alexander frowned.

“Where?”

Evelyn struggled.

“Behind… wall.”

Thomas suddenly looked up.

“The west wall?”

Evelyn nodded.

Alexander turned toward Marcus.

“Check it.”

Within minutes, a security team began examining the study.

The room was filled with dark wooden shelves, old photographs, and furniture that had belonged to Thomas for decades.

Marcus carefully inspected the wall behind a large painting.

A narrow seam ran along the wooden paneling.

He pressed against it.

Nothing happened.

Then he noticed a small brass fitting beneath the frame.

A concealed latch.

He turned it.

The panel opened.

Inside was a shallow compartment.

A single black folder rested on a shelf.

Marcus photographed the compartment and contacted Bennett before removing anything.

When the detective arrived, the folder was documented and opened.

Across the cover were four words.

VANCE FAMILY CONTINUITY AGREEMENT.

Alexander stared.

“What is that?”

Bennett began reading.

The agreement appeared to establish emergency procedures for managing the Vance family's assets if Alexander became unavailable or legally unable to exercise control.

It referred to an alternate beneficiary identity.

A substitute custodian.

And a special authorization mechanism connected to the blue trust.

Maria felt cold.

“Gabriel.”

Bennett nodded.

“Possibly. We need to authenticate the document and determine whether any provision was ever valid.”

Alexander looked toward his mother.

“Did Richard tell you this was about Gabriel?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“He… said… insurance.”

Alexander's expression changed.

“Insurance?”

Evelyn began crying.

“Against… danger.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“Richard convinced her the agreement would protect Alexander if someone targeted him.”

Alexander turned sharply.

“And you knew?”

Thomas looked devastated.

“I discovered it years later.”

“Then why didn't you destroy it?”

“Because the document wasn't the only copy.”

Bennett nodded.

“If it was used to create fraudulent records, destroying it wouldn't necessarily stop the scheme. It could also destroy evidence.”

Alexander looked toward the folder.

The agreement carried Evelyn's signature.

But the signature wasn't the only disturbing detail.

A second name appeared beneath the authorization section.

THOMAS VANCE.

Alexander froze.

“Dad?”

Thomas stared at the document.

“I never signed that.”

Bennett examined the page.

“We'll have the signature analyzed.”

Alexander looked at his father.

“You're saying it's forged?”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

Maria watched his face.

He looked genuinely shocked.

But after everything she had learned, she no longer knew whether shock meant innocence.

Bennett turned another page.

The document included a schedule of anticipated events.

A change in family leadership.

A transfer of certain trust responsibilities.

And a contingency triggered by Alexander's disappearance.

Then she reached the final page.

Her expression changed.

“Alexander.”

He looked up.

“What?”

Bennett pointed toward a handwritten notation.

The agreement had been amended seventeen years earlier.

The same year Gabriel was born.

The amendment referred to a minor whose records were to be maintained under a protected identity.

Alexander read the line.

His stomach tightened.

SUBJECT A.V.-2.

Gabriel.

The boy whose life had been stolen before he was old enough to understand it.

Maria stepped closer.

“Does it say who authorized the amendment?”

Bennett nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

The detective hesitated.

Then turned the document toward them.

The authorization was signed:

RICHARD STERLING.

Alexander exhaled.

“Of course.”

But Bennett wasn't finished.

“There is a second authorization.”

Maria stared.

“Whose?”

Bennett slowly pointed toward the bottom of the page.

The name had been written in elegant black ink.

EVELYN VANCE.

Alexander closed his eyes.

His mother had signed the original agreement.

And apparently, someone had used her name again when Gabriel was born.

Evelyn began crying.

“Didn't… sign…”

Alexander looked up.

“What?”

She shook her head desperately.

“Not… second.”

Bennett nodded.

“We'll investigate whether the amendment signature was forged.”

Then Thomas suddenly stepped forward.

“Look at the witness line.”

Bennett examined it.

Her expression changed.

A third signature appeared beneath the amendment.

The handwriting was different.

The name was unfamiliar to Alexander.

But Maria recognized it immediately.

ISABELLA SANTOS.

Maria stared.

“My mother?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

Bennett looked toward Maria.

“This could indicate Isabella witnessed the amendment. It doesn't establish whether she consented or whether the signature is genuine.”

Maria shook her head.

“She would never agree to help steal someone's identity.”

Thomas looked toward her.

“Isabella may have signed because she was trying to protect Gabriel.”

Maria turned sharply.

“You don't know that.”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“No.”

Alexander stared at the page.

Three signatures.

Richard Sterling.

Evelyn Vance.

Isabella Santos.

Three people whose lives had been connected by a child hidden under Alexander's name.

And somewhere beyond the estate, Gabriel was still missing.

Suddenly, Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Detective Bennett, we have an update from the address Victoria provided.”

Bennett turned.

“Did you locate Gabriel?”

Marcus hesitated.

“The residence was empty.”

Maria felt her heart sink.

“No…”

Marcus continued.

“But investigators found a medical room, several forged identification documents, and a recent photograph of Gabriel.”

Alexander clenched his jaw.

“Where was he taken?”

“We don't know yet.”

Bennett asked, “Any evidence of where he might have gone?”

Marcus nodded.

“A vehicle was recorded leaving the property less than an hour before officers arrived.”

“Can you identify it?”

“Yes.”

He turned the tablet around.

A black SUV appeared on the screen.

The license plate had been partially obscured.

But the driver was visible.

Alexander leaned closer.

His expression changed.

“That's impossible.”

Maria stared.

“What?”

Alexander pointed toward the driver.

The man had dark hair, a strong jaw, and a familiar posture.

He looked almost exactly like Thomas Vance had looked twenty-two years earlier.

Marcus enlarged the photograph.

Thomas stepped forward.

His face drained of color.

Bennett looked toward him.

“Do you recognize the driver?”

Thomas didn't answer.

Alexander stared.

“Dad?”

Thomas slowly sat down.

His hands were trembling.

Maria felt cold.

“Who is he?”

Thomas looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“HE'S THE MAN WHO HELPED ME DISAPPEAR.”

Alexander froze.

“Who?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered:

“MY BROTHER.”

Alexander stared.

“You never told me you had a brother.”

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was told he died before you were born.”

Bennett looked sharply toward Marcus.

“Run the photograph through the available identification records.”

Marcus nodded.

But before he could respond, Alexander's phone vibrated.

A new video message.

No sender.

No return number.

He opened it.

Gabriel appeared on the screen.

He was sitting in the back seat of a moving vehicle.

His face was pale.

His eyes were filled with tears.

“Alexander,” he whispered, “I know you don't trust me.”

Alexander leaned closer.

Gabriel continued.

“But I found something in the documents Richard kept.”

Maria grabbed Alexander's arm.

“Gabriel…”

The boy looked directly into the camera.

“I know who ordered me to replace you.”

Alexander stopped breathing.

“Who?”

Gabriel swallowed.

Then whispered:

“IT WASN'T RICHARD STERLING.”

The screen shook.

Someone shouted in the background.

Gabriel looked over his shoulder.

Then turned back.

“THE PERSON WHO ORDERED IT IS THE SAME PERSON WHO SIGNED THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.”

Alexander stared at the document in Bennett's hands.

Evelyn's signature.

Thomas's disputed signature.

Richard's name.

Isabella's name.

Gabriel began crying.

“Alexander, please don't let them tell you another lie.”

The video froze.

Then a final image appeared.

A photograph of a much younger Evelyn Vance standing beside a man who looked exactly like Thomas.

But beneath the photograph was a handwritten caption.

EDWARD VANCE — THE BROTHER WHO NEVER DIED.

Alexander slowly turned toward his father.

Thomas looked devastated.

Then he whispered:

“EDWARD DIDN'T JUST HELP ME DISAPPEAR.”

Maria felt her stomach tighten.

Alexander stared.

“What did he do?”

Thomas looked directly at his son.

May you like

“HE WAS THE ONE WHO TOLD RICHARD STERLING THAT ALEXANDER VANCE HAD TO BE REPLACED.”
