Chapter 31 - THE BILLIONAIRE WHO LEARNED HIS NAME MAY HAVE BELONGED TO SOMEONE ELSE“WHAT DO YOU MEAN I WAS ALREADY REPLACED?”

Alexander Vance’s voice struck the boardroom like thunder.
Nobody moved.
Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, Manhattan glittered beneath a cold gray sky, thousands of people moving through the streets far below without knowing that inside one of the most powerful corporations in America, a billionaire had just been told that the identity he had carried for most of his life might not actually belong to him.
Gabriel stood beside Maria, trembling.
“I saw the hospital file,” he whispered. “There were two photographs.”
Alexander stared at him.
“What photographs?”
Gabriel swallowed.
“One was taken the morning Thomas disappeared. The other was taken that night.”
Edward Vance leaned against the glass conference table with a faint smile.
For the first time, Alexander wanted to cross the room and wipe that smile from his uncle’s face with his bare hands.
Detective Bennett noticed.
“Alexander,” she warned quietly.
He forced himself to remain still.
Gabriel continued.
“The first photograph showed a thirteen-year-old boy being treated for a cut above his eyebrow. The name on the chart was Alexander Vance.”
Alexander touched his eyebrow instinctively.
There was no scar.
Gabriel’s eyes filled with tears.
“The second photograph showed another boy brought into a private clinic almost twelve hours later.”
Maria felt her stomach tighten.
“What was his name?”
Gabriel looked at Alexander.
“The record was blank.”
Silence.
Then Alexander laughed.
It was not amusement.
It was disbelief breaking under pressure.
“So this entire theory is based on a blank medical record?”
Edward finally spoke.
“No.”
Alexander turned toward him.
Edward’s smile disappeared.
“It is based on DNA.”
The room froze.
Thomas Vance was not present, but his shadow seemed to fill the boardroom anyway.
Alexander slowly approached Edward.
“What DNA?”
Edward removed another document from his coat.
Detective Bennett immediately stepped between them.
“You’re not touching anything else until it has been documented.”
Edward calmly placed the paper on the table.
“By all means.”
Bennett photographed it before opening the transparent sleeve.
The report appeared old.
Twenty-two years old.
Alexander’s eyes moved across the page.
PATERNITY ANALYSIS.
SUBJECT A: THOMAS VANCE.
SUBJECT B: MALE MINOR — IDENTITY SEALED.
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0.00%.
Maria covered her mouth.
Marcus stepped closer.
“That could be anybody.”
Edward nodded.
“Correct.”
Then he pointed toward a handwritten notation at the bottom.
Bennett read it aloud.
“Patient discharged under the name Alexander Thomas Vance.”
Alexander’s face went white.
Maria reached for his hand.
He did not pull away.
Edward watched them.
“Still think this is only about forged signatures?”
Alexander looked at him.
“If I’m not Thomas’s son, then who am I?”
Edward’s expression became strangely serious.
“That is the question your father spent twenty-two years making sure nobody asked.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“My DNA can settle part of this.”
Everyone turned.
Marcus—Daniel Hale—looked at Alexander.
“If Thomas is my biological father, compare Alexander’s DNA with mine.”
Bennett nodded.
“A sibling comparison could provide useful evidence, but we need controlled samples and an accredited laboratory.”
Alexander stared at Marcus.
Twenty-four hours earlier, learning that his security chief might be his brother had felt impossible.
Now he was standing in the middle of his own boardroom wondering whether they were related at all.
Maria squeezed his hand.
“Whatever the test says, it doesn’t erase the life you lived.”
Alexander looked at her.
“You don’t know that.”
“I know you.”
His expression cracked for only a second.
Maria continued.
“I know the man who protected his mother when Victoria threatened her. I know the man who protected Gabriel when he could have treated him like an enemy. I know the man who refused to let Edward turn Marcus against him.”
She stepped closer.
“A laboratory can tell you who your biological family is. It cannot tell you who you chose to become.”
Edward laughed.
“How touching.”
Maria turned.
“And how terrified you must be.”
Edward’s smile vanished.
Maria stared at him.
“You keep bringing documents. Photographs. Secrets. Every time Alexander survives one revelation, you bring another.”
She took one step toward him.
“You don’t want him to learn the truth.”
Edward’s eyes narrowed.
“You want him to collapse before he reaches it.”
For the first time, Edward said nothing.
Bennett noticed.
So did Alexander.
Marcus slowly moved toward Edward.
“What is she going to find?”
Edward looked at him.
“Ask Thomas.”
Alexander immediately called his father.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Marcus contacted estate security.
His expression changed.
“Thomas left the estate forty minutes ago.”
Alexander froze.
“Where?”
“They don’t know.”
Bennett cursed under her breath.
“Find his vehicle.”
Marcus opened the tracking system.
The screen showed Thomas’s car moving north.
Alexander frowned.
“Where is he going?”
Marcus enlarged the map.
Then his face changed.
“Blackwater.”
Gabriel stepped backward.
“No.”
Maria turned.
“What?”
Gabriel began shaking.
“That’s where they trained us.”
Alexander looked toward Bennett.
“We’re going.”
She shook her head.
“You are staying here until the board formally suspends this fraudulent transfer.”
Jonathan Pierce spoke from the far end of the table.
“The board has enough evidence to freeze all continuity actions pending independent investigation.”
Edward turned sharply.
“You cannot do that.”
Pierce looked at him.
“We just did.”
One by one, the directors voted.
The transfer was suspended.
Alexander remained CEO pending investigation.
Edward watched his plan collapse around him.
Yet strangely, he did not appear angry.
He smiled.
Alexander noticed.
“You expected this.”
Edward said nothing.
“You wanted us focused on the company.”
Edward’s smile widened.
Alexander felt cold.
“Why?”
Edward looked toward the windows.
“Because while everyone was fighting over a corporation…”
He checked his watch.
“…Thomas was doing exactly what I needed him to do.”
Gabriel whispered, “What did you make him do?”
Edward turned toward him.
“Go home.”
Marcus’s phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
His face drained of color.
“Alexander.”
“What?”
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Thomas’s vehicle stopped at Blackwater twelve minutes ago.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“And?”
Marcus swallowed.
“The building’s fire alarm activated six minutes later.”
Gabriel covered his mouth.
Bennett immediately contacted emergency services.
Alexander stared at Edward.
“What’s inside Blackwater?”
Edward smiled.
“The answer.”
“To what?”
Edward looked directly into Alexander’s eyes.
“To the question you should have asked twenty-two years ago.”
Alexander’s voice dropped.
“Who am I?”
Edward nodded.
Then Maria’s phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a woman whispered:
“Maria?”
Maria stopped breathing.
She knew the voice.
“Mom?”
Alexander turned.
Isabella Santos began crying on the other end.
“Listen to me. You have to stop Thomas.”
“Where are you?”
“No time.”
“Mom!”
Isabella’s voice became desperate.
“Thomas is going to Blackwater because he thinks the original Alexander is dead.”
Maria looked at Alexander.
Her blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?”
Isabella whispered:
“HE ISN’T.”
Alexander slowly stepped toward the phone.
Maria could barely speak.
“Where is he?”
Isabella began sobbing.
Then she said the words that silenced the entire boardroom.
“THE REAL ALEXANDER VANCE HAS BEEN ALIVE FOR TWENTY-TWO YEARS.”
May you like
The line went dead.
