Chapter 7 - The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

“STOP LYING ABOUT MY FAMILY!”
Maria's voice echoed through the abandoned chapel.

Elena Santos stood beneath the stained-glass window, watching her niece with an expression that was impossible to read.

Alexander stepped between them.

“You've made enough accusations. Start providing evidence.”

Elena laughed quietly.

“Evidence? That's what destroyed this family in the first place.”

Marcus moved toward the rear entrance, checking the shadows beyond the pews.

The chapel was quiet now.

Too quiet.

Maria could hear the rain tapping against the stained-glass windows.

She stared at Elena.

“If you're really my aunt, why did you pretend to be my mother?”

Elena looked away.

“Because I needed you to come here.”

“You could have asked.”

“Would you have believed me?”

Maria opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Elena continued.

“Your mother made enemies who were willing to kill for what she discovered. I couldn't risk contacting you openly.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“Then why threaten her?”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“I didn't write the second message.”

Maria froze.

“What?”

“The photograph was mine. The invitation was mine. But the message saying you'd never see your mother again wasn't.”

Marcus immediately looked toward Alexander.

“Someone intercepted the communication.”

Elena nodded.

“And whoever did it wanted Maria to enter this chapel.”

Alexander glanced toward the rear door.

“Why?”

Elena swallowed.

“Because of the pendant.”

Maria instinctively covered the silver flower around her neck.

Alexander stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Elena reached slowly into her coat and removed a faded photograph.

She handed it to Maria.

The image showed two young women standing outside a small brick house.

One was Isabella.

The other was Elena.

Between them stood a handsome man in his early thirties, wearing a dark business suit.

Maria stared at him.

She recognized his face.

Not from family photographs.

From the portrait hanging above the fireplace in Alexander's study.

“Thomas Vance,” she whispered.

Elena nodded.

“He was your mother's closest ally.”

Maria looked up.

“And my father?”

Elena hesitated.

“Your biological father was connected to the same financial investigation.”

Maria's heart pounded.

“Who was he?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I promised Isabella I wouldn't tell you until she could explain it herself.”

Maria stepped closer.

“You just told me the man who raised me wasn't my father. You don't get to stop now.”

Alexander watched Elena carefully.

“Maria deserves the truth.”

Elena looked toward the altar.

Then she whispered:

“Your mother was working with Thomas to expose Richard Sterling.”

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“We already know that.”

“No,” Elena replied. “You know Richard was involved. You don't know what he was protecting.”

She opened her handbag and removed a thin folder.

Inside were copies of financial transfers dating back more than two decades.

Each page carried the same symbol.

A five-petaled flower.

Maria touched her pendant.

“The same flower.”

Elena nodded.

“The symbol identified a private group of accountants and trustees who were supposed to protect the original records.”

Alexander studied the documents.

Several transfers appeared to move large sums through shell companies before returning them to accounts controlled by Sterling-linked businesses.

He recognized two company names.

Both had been acquired by Vance Global after his father's disappearance.

“This money came from the blue trust,” he whispered.

Elena nodded.

“Richard Sterling didn't simply steal from your father. He used the missing records to build a financial empire.”

Maria stared at the documents.

“Then why does he need my pendant?”

“Because Isabella kept the second authentication token. Richard could copy documents, but he couldn't easily establish legitimate control of the trust without the original custodians' records.”

Alexander glanced toward Maria.

“Which means your mother was protecting evidence.”

Elena nodded.

“And someone has spent years trying to find it.”

Suddenly, Marcus's radio crackled.

“Mr. Vance, Detective Bennett has arrived at the estate.”

Alexander immediately answered.

“Send her to the chapel.”

Elena's expression changed.

“No.”

Alexander turned.

“What?”

“You can't bring the police here.”

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“Why not?”

Elena looked toward the old wooden altar.

“Because someone in the investigation is working for Richard Sterling.”

Alexander stared at her.

“That's a serious accusation.”

“I know.”

“Do you have proof?”

Elena reached into the folder.

Then froze.

A low electronic tone sounded from somewhere beneath the altar.

Maria looked around.

“What was that?”

Marcus immediately signaled everyone to move away from the front of the chapel.

Alexander grabbed Maria's hand.

“Back toward the entrance.”

The tone repeated.

Then a hidden speaker crackled.

A man's voice filled the chapel.

“GOOD EVENING, ELENA.”

Elena went pale.

Maria stared toward the altar.

The voice continued.

“You were instructed to bring the girl alone.”

Alexander's expression darkened.

“Richard Sterling?”

A soft laugh followed.

“Alexander. Always so eager to protect someone.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Show yourself.”

“There's no need.”

The speaker crackled again.

“You have something that belongs to me.”

Maria gripped her pendant.

“You're not getting it.”

The man laughed.

“Just like your mother.”

Maria felt a wave of anger.

“Where is Isabella?”

Silence.

Then the man answered:

“Your mother is alive.”

Maria stopped breathing.

Elena closed her eyes.

The voice continued.

“And if you want to see her again, you'll give Alexander the pendant and tell him to place it beside his father's ring.”

Alexander looked toward the altar.

“Why?”

“Because there's something beneath that altar neither of you understands.”

Maria glanced at Elena.

She looked terrified.

Alexander slowly removed the diamond ring from his pocket.

“Maria, don't move.”

He approached the altar cautiously, accompanied by Marcus.

A narrow metal plate was set into the stone beneath the wooden cross.

Two small recesses were visible.

One circular.

One shaped like a five-petaled flower.

Alexander stared.

“The authentication system.”

Elena whispered:

“Don't.”

Alexander turned.

“Why?”

Elena's voice broke.

“Because the records aren't the only thing hidden here.”

Maria stepped closer.

“What else?”

Elena began crying.

“Your mother tried to warn me.”

Alexander looked toward the metal plate.

Then toward the speaker.

The voice returned.

“Put the ring in place, Alexander.”

Alexander remained still.

“Not until you tell us what we're opening.”

A pause.

Then the man answered:

“THE RECORD THAT PROVES WHO MARIA SANTOS REALLY IS.”

Maria stared at Elena.

Her aunt lowered her head.

And in that moment, Maria understood something terrifying.

Elena wasn't afraid of Richard Sterling.

May you like

She was afraid of what Maria might discover.
