Chapter 35 - THE KIDNAPPER DEMANDED BOTH MEN WHO SHARED ONE NAME“EDWARD HAS MY MOTHER.”

Alexander stood beside Evelyn’s empty bed.

Broken glass glittered across the carpet.

Cold night air poured through the shattered window.

Marcus examined the security feed.

“Three minutes.”

Alexander turned.

“What?”

“That’s how long the cameras were disabled.”

Michael stared toward the darkness outside.

“He planned this.”

Thomas whispered, “He plans everything.”

Alexander spun toward him.

“Then help me think like him.”

Thomas looked stunned.

“You spent your life running from Edward. Tonight you stop running.”

Thomas slowly nodded.

Detective Bennett organized a statewide alert.

But Alexander already knew where Evelyn was being taken.

Summerhouse Seven.

The message had been explicit.

Both Alexanders.

Michael looked at him.

“He wants us together.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Alexander remembered the lake.

The bicycle.

The gunshot.

“I think because we were together when everything went wrong.”

Isabella approached.

“You cannot go alone.”

Maria immediately said, “Neither can you.”

Alexander turned.

“No.”

She stared.

“No?”

“You’re staying here.”

Maria laughed once.

It contained no humor.

“You still haven’t learned.”

“This is different.”

“It’s always different.”

“Maria—”

She stepped closer.

“This started because Victoria raised her hand against Evelyn and everyone else decided silence was safer.”

Her eyes burned.

“I am not becoming one of those people now.”

Alexander stared at her.

She continued.

“I’m not asking permission.”

Michael almost smiled.

Alexander looked toward him.

“Don’t encourage her.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were thinking it.”

For one brief second, tension broke.

Then Bennett interrupted.

“We have vehicle footage.”

A black van had traveled north.

Toward Connecticut.

Alexander prepared to leave.

Thomas grabbed his arm.

“There’s something you need to know about Summerhouse Seven.”

Alexander looked at him.

“The basement has tunnels.”

“Where do they lead?”

“To the lake.”

Marcus nodded.

“We’ll coordinate tactical teams around both exits.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“I’m coming.”

Maria immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You’re doing exactly what Alexander did to you.”

Maria opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Gabriel continued.

“Edward trained me. I know how he thinks.”

Alexander considered it.

Bennett answered for him.

“Absolutely not.”

Gabriel frowned.

“You need someone who recognizes his commands.”

“You’re seventeen.”

“And I survived him.”

The words silenced everyone.

Bennett eventually agreed Gabriel could remain at the command perimeter.

They reached Connecticut shortly before dawn.

Summerhouse Seven stood beside a black lake surrounded by skeletal trees.

The building looked abandoned.

But one upstairs window glowed.

Alexander and Michael stood beside each other.

Two men.

One stolen name.

One stolen childhood.

Michael whispered, “Do you remember running?”

“Yes.”

“So do I.”

Alexander looked at him.

“You remember me?”

“Not your face.”

Michael touched the scar above his eyebrow.

“But I remember someone pulling me through a window.”

Alexander’s eyes filled.

“I think it was me.”

Michael nodded.

“And I think I went back for you.”

Neither spoke.

Then the front door opened.

Edward’s voice came through an outdoor speaker.

“Welcome home, boys.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“Where is Evelyn?”

“Inside.”

Michael shouted, “Show us.”

An upstairs curtain moved.

Evelyn appeared.

Alive.

Edward stood behind her.

Alexander stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Edward smiled.

“After twenty-two years, you still think this is negotiation.”

He looked at Michael.

“The original.”

Then Alexander.

“The replacement.”

Edward’s smile widened.

“Come inside.”

Bennett’s voice whispered through Alexander’s earpiece.

“Do not enter until tactical teams are positioned.”

Edward suddenly held up a small device.

A detonator.

Bennett went silent.

Edward called out.

“If I see one officer, Evelyn dies.”

Alexander removed his earpiece.

He dropped it.

Michael did the same.

Together they entered.

The house smelled of dust and lake water.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Children.

Dozens of them.

Gabriel.

Marcus.

Michael.

Alexander.

Others they had never seen.

Michael whispered, “My God.”

Edward’s voice came from upstairs.

“You were never special.”

Alexander clenched his fists.

“That’s what men like Thomas never understood.”

They climbed.

Evelyn sat inside a bedroom.

Edward stood beside her.

No gun.

Only the detonator.

Alexander looked around.

“Where are the explosives?”

Edward smiled.

“Maybe there aren’t any.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Then you’re bluffing.”

“Maybe.”

Alexander studied Edward.

He had spent years reading people across negotiating tables.

Edward wanted something.

Not escape.

Not money.

A confession.

“Why bring us here?”

Edward looked toward the lake.

“Because one of you remembers what happened.”

Michael frowned.

“What happened?”

“The night Thomas destroyed everything.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

Edward continued.

“Thomas came here to retrieve his son.”

Michael looked toward him.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

“But he took Ethan instead.”

Alexander stared.

“No.”

Edward smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Michael went pale.

“Thomas saw both of us.”

“Yes.”

“And chose him?”

Edward pointed at Alexander.

“He chose the boy who could be controlled.”

Alexander shook his head.

“That contradicts everything Thomas said.”

“Thomas lies.”

“So do you.”

Edward smiled.

“Then remember.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

The lake.

The rain.

Two boys.

Thomas running toward them.

A car waiting.

Someone shouting.

One boy reaching for Thomas.

Alexander suddenly remembered Thomas looking directly at Michael.

Then turning away.

His eyes opened.

Michael saw the answer.

“He left me.”

Alexander whispered, “Yes.”

Michael stepped backward.

Edward smiled.

“There it is.”

Evelyn began crying.

Michael looked at her.

“Did you know?”

She shook her head desperately.

Edward laughed.

“She knew later.”

Michael’s face twisted.

“You let me spend twenty-two years thinking nobody wanted me.”

Evelyn sobbed.

“I’m… sorry.”

Edward moved closer.

“Now you understand why I created the continuity agreement.”

Michael stared.

“You wanted me to take the company.”

“No.”

Edward smiled.

“I wanted you to destroy it.”

Alexander froze.

Edward continued.

“Vance Global was built on stolen identities, hidden children, and money washed through charitable trusts.”

“That was your network.”

“Partly.”

Edward’s expression hardened.

“But Thomas benefited.”

Alexander stared.

“And you want revenge.”

“I want history corrected.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“By destroying people you kidnapped?”

Edward’s smile disappeared.

“You think you were kidnapped?”

Michael froze.

Edward leaned closer.

“Your mother gave you to me.”

Evelyn screamed.

“No!”

Everyone turned.

Edward looked at her.

Evelyn was shaking violently.

“No… lie…”

Edward stared.

Evelyn forced the words out.

“I never… gave… Michael.”

Michael knelt beside her.

“Mom?”

Evelyn pointed toward Edward.

“He… took… you.”

Edward’s face changed.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“But Thomas… knew.”

Alexander stared.

“What did he know?”

Evelyn looked at Michael.

Tears streamed down her face.

“Thomas knew where you were.”

Michael stopped breathing.

“For how long?”

Evelyn cried.

“Twenty-two years.”

Silence.

Michael stood.

Edward smiled.

And somewhere outside, a rifle cracked.

The upstairs window shattered.

Edward dropped the detonator.

Alexander lunged.

Michael grabbed Evelyn.

A second gunshot exploded.

Edward crashed through the bedroom door and disappeared into the hallway.

Alexander chased him.

At the end of the corridor, Edward turned.

He was smiling.

Then he jumped through an open window.

Alexander reached it seconds later.

Below was the lake.

Empty.

No body.

Only ripples.

Behind him, Michael shouted.

“ETHAN!”

Alexander turned.

Evelyn had collapsed.

Michael held her.

She was still conscious.

Barely.

She reached toward Alexander.

“Find…”

He knelt.

“Find what?”

Her lips trembled.

“The… girl.”

Maria, arriving with Bennett after the tactical entry, froze in the doorway.

“What girl?”

Evelyn looked directly at Maria.

“The girl… Edward took… after you.”

Maria stopped breathing.

“After me?”

Evelyn nodded weakly.

Isabella’s face went white.

Maria turned toward her mother.

“Mom?”

Isabella began crying.

May you like

And Maria realized there was still one child nobody had told her about.
