Chapter 15 - The Mother Behind the Locked Hospital Door

WEARING MY AUNT'S NAME?”
Maria's voice cracked as she stared at the photograph on Alexander's phone.
The woman in the hospital bed had Isabella Santos's eyes.
Her face was older.
Her hair was streaked with gray.
But the small scar near her eyebrow was unmistakable.
Maria remembered kissing that scar as a child.
She remembered asking how her mother got it.
Isabella always smiled and said she'd been clumsy when she was young.
Now Maria wondered whether even that story had been true.
Thomas Vance stared at the screen.
“It's Isabella.”
Grace stepped closer.
“How can you be sure?”
Thomas swallowed.
“Because of the scar.”
Grace shook her head.
“Elena had the same scar.”
Maria froze.
“What?”
Grace looked toward her.
“They were sisters. They looked very similar. Both had small scars near their eyebrows, but on opposite sides.”
Alexander studied the photograph.
“Which side is Isabella's?”
Maria answered immediately.
“Her left.”
Grace nodded.
“Elena's was on the right.”
Bennett leaned forward.
The image was clear enough to show the scar near the woman's left eyebrow.
But a photograph could be mirrored.
She looked toward Thomas.
“We can't identify her conclusively from this image.”
Thomas nodded reluctantly.
“Then we find her.”
Alexander examined the message.
There was no return number.
Only an encrypted contact address and a location marker.
Marcus entered the room carrying a tablet.
“Sir, we traced the image's apparent location.”
Alexander turned.
“Where?”
“A private medical facility in Westchester County.”
Bennett frowned.
“Which facility?”
“Ravenwood Recovery Center.”
Grace went pale.
Maria noticed.
“You know it?”
Grace nodded slowly.
“I was taken there once.”
Alexander stared.
“When?”
“After I tried to contact Isabella six years ago.”
The room fell silent.
Grace continued.
“I woke up in a hospital room. They told me I'd suffered a breakdown. They said my memories were unreliable.”
Maria felt cold.
“Who told you that?”
“A doctor named Adrian Keller.”
Bennett wrote down the name.
“Did he work for Ravenwood?”
Grace nodded.
“Yes.”
Thomas's expression darkened.
“I know that name.”
Alexander turned.
“From where?”
Thomas looked toward Bennett.
“Adrian Keller was a physician who helped Richard Sterling arrange confidential medical placements.”
Maria stared.
“Placements?”
Thomas nodded.
“People who needed to disappear from public records.”
Alexander's voice became cold.
“Or people Richard wanted hidden.”
Thomas said nothing.
That silence was answer enough.
Bennett immediately contacted her department.
“We need to verify the facility, the patient's identity, and whether anyone is being held there against their will.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“I'm going.”
Bennett shook her head.
“Not until we know what we're walking into.”
Maria looked at her.
“My mother might be there.”
“I understand. But rushing into a private facility without a plan could endanger her.”
Alexander turned toward Marcus.
“Have our legal team prepare everything necessary to support the investigation.”
Marcus nodded.
“Already on it.”
Grace stepped toward Maria.
“I'll come with you.”
Maria stared at her.
For the first time, she looked at Grace not as a mysterious woman or a possible liar.
But as a sister.
A woman who had spent her childhood without knowing where she belonged.
A woman who had carried the same questions Maria was only beginning to ask.
“Why didn't you tell me who you were?” Maria whispered.
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was afraid you would hate me.”
Maria shook her head.
“I don't hate you.”
Grace began crying.
“I thought Isabella abandoned me.”
Maria took her hand.
“She didn't.”
Grace looked up.
“How do you know?”
“Because she kept your photograph.”
Grace covered her mouth.
Maria continued.
“She kept your birth certificate. She wrote about you. She made sure Sofia knew there was someone named Grace.”
Tears streamed down Grace's face.
For years, she had imagined Isabella choosing another family over her.
Now she was learning that her mother had searched for her.
Had remembered her.
Had loved her.
Grace whispered, “I want to see her.”
Maria squeezed her hand.
“So do I.”
Two hours later, Detective Bennett received confirmation that Ravenwood Recovery Center was operating under a corporate ownership structure connected to several Sterling-affiliated companies.
The facility had valid medical licenses, but its patient records were subject to unusual confidentiality restrictions.
Bennett's team obtained authorization to investigate the reported patient and interview staff.
Alexander, Maria, Grace, and Thomas waited in a nearby police staging area.
No one spoke much.
Alexander stared through the windshield at the enormous stone building beyond the security gate.
It looked more like a luxury hotel than a medical facility.
Tall windows.
Perfectly maintained gardens.
A circular driveway lined with expensive vehicles.
But Maria noticed something unsettling.
Several windows on the upper floors were covered from the inside.
Grace noticed them too.
“That was the floor where they kept me.”
Maria turned.
“Are you sure?”
Grace nodded.
“I remember those windows.”
Bennett approached.
“We're going in now. You stay here until we know it's safe.”
Alexander nodded.
“Understood.”
Maria watched the detective enter the building with several officers.
The minutes passed painfully slowly.
Then Bennett called.
Alexander answered immediately.
“Detective?”
“We found the room from the photograph.”
Maria leaned closer.
“Is she there?”
Bennett hesitated.
“No.”
Maria's heart sank.
“What?”
“The room is empty.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Was she moved?”
“According to staff, the patient was transferred this morning.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“To where?”
Bennett paused.
“That's what we're trying to establish.”
Maria closed her eyes.
Another disappearance.
Another locked door.
Another person moved just before they arrived.
She was beginning to feel as though someone was leading them through a maze designed to keep them one step behind.
Alexander looked toward Marcus.
“Can we trace the transfer?”
Marcus nodded.
“We're checking vehicle records and authorized transport providers.”
Grace stared at the building.
“There's something you need to know.”
Maria turned.
“What?”
Grace pointed toward the west wing.
“When I was here, there was a private elevator behind the laundry room.”
Alexander frowned.
“What did it lead to?”
“I never saw the lower floor. But I heard people talking about a records archive.”
Thomas went still.
“An archive?”
Grace nodded.
“They said the real files were kept downstairs.”
Alexander looked toward the building.
“Bennett needs to know.”
He called the detective.
She listened carefully.
Then answered, “We'll check whether that area is covered by our authorization and secure any evidence we're legally permitted to access.”
Twenty minutes later, she called again.
Her voice was different.
“Alexander, we found something.”
Maria stepped closer.
“What?”
“A sealed room beneath the west wing.”
Thomas's expression changed.
Bennett continued.
“It contains old patient files, photographs, and records dating back more than twenty years.”
Alexander stared.
“Anything about Isabella?”
“We found a folder labeled Elena Santos.”
Maria's heart pounded.
“And?”
Bennett paused.
“The photograph inside matches the woman in the hospital bed.”
Maria closed her eyes.
“Mom…”
“But there's a problem.”
Alexander's jaw tightened.
“What problem?”
“The file identifies her as Elena Santos. It also contains a second photograph labeled Isabella Santos.”
Grace went still.
“Two photographs?”
“Yes.”
Maria's voice trembled.
“Are they different women?”
Bennett hesitated.
“They appear to be.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“Then both sisters were here.”
Bennett didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she continued examining the file.
Then she said quietly:
“There's another document.”
Alexander stared.
“What?”
“A transfer authorization signed yesterday.”
Maria's heart pounded.
“Who signed it?”
Bennett read the name.
“Dr. Adrian Keller.”
Grace whispered, “He's still involved.”
Bennett continued.
“And the receiving facility is listed as the Sterling family's private medical residence.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Victoria's estate.”
Maria felt her stomach tighten.
The same place Victoria had demanded they bring the ring, pendant, and trust records.
The same place where she claimed Isabella was being held.
It wasn't a coincidence.
Someone wanted them there.
Someone was moving the women around like pieces in a game.
Then Bennett's voice changed.
“Alexander…”
He turned toward the phone.
“What?”
“I've found something else in the archive.”
Maria gripped his arm.
Bennett continued.
“A patient photograph taken seventeen years ago.”
Alexander frowned.
“Who is it?”
The detective hesitated.
“It's a woman identified as Isabella Santos.”
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
“And?”
Bennett's next words came slowly.
“SHE'S HOLDING A NEWBORN BABY.”
Maria froze.
“A baby?”
“Yes.”
“But my mother supposedly died seventeen years ago.”
Bennett looked down at the photograph.
“The date matches the week of her reported funeral.”
The room fell silent.
Maria stared at Alexander.
Grace began trembling.
Thomas closed his eyes.
And then Bennett whispered the final detail.
“THE BABY'S HOSPITAL BRACELET SAYS ALEXANDER VANCE.”
Alexander went completely still.
Maria's breath caught.
Thomas looked as though he had seen a ghost.
Because Alexander Vance had been thirteen years old when Isabella Santos supposedly died.
And yet someone had placed his name on the wrist of a newborn baby.
Alexander slowly turned toward his father.
“DAD…”
His voice broke.
“WHO WAS THAT CHILD?”
Thomas stared at the phone.
Then whispered:
