Chapter 17 - The Mother Who Paid to Hide a Child

“MY MOTHER PAID FOR THAT BOY'S ENTIRE CHILDHOOD?”
Alexander stared at Marcus as though he had misunderstood the words.

Marcus placed the financial records on the table.

“According to these documents, payments were made through a private Vance family account for nearly fourteen years.”

Thomas Vance closed his eyes.

Maria watched him carefully.

He wasn't surprised.

And that frightened her more than the documents themselves.

“Dad,” Alexander said, “you knew?”

Thomas remained silent.

Alexander stepped forward.

“Don't make me ask twice.”

Thomas finally looked up.

“Evelyn knew about the child.”

Maria felt a wave of anger.

“Then why didn't she tell us?”

“Because she believed the boy would be killed if his identity became public.”

Alexander shook his head.

“My mother spent decades protecting everyone except the people who deserved the truth.”

Thomas looked wounded.

“She was protecting you.”

“By lying to me?”

Thomas had no answer.

Detective Bennett studied the payment records.

“These documents establish that someone used Evelyn's credentials. They don't establish that she personally authorized every payment.”

Alexander turned.

“Then we ask her.”

Within an hour, arrangements were made for a secure video consultation with Evelyn at the Vance Estate.

Her physician confirmed she was well enough for a short conversation.

Maria sat beside Alexander as the screen illuminated.

Evelyn appeared in her wheelchair, wearing a soft gray cardigan. Her white hair was neatly brushed, but exhaustion showed in her face.

When she saw Thomas standing behind Alexander, her eyes filled with tears.

“Thomas…”

He stepped closer.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Twenty-two years of grief stood between them.

Then Alexander interrupted.

“Mother, I need you to tell me the truth about Hollowbrook Academy.”

Evelyn's expression changed.

She looked toward Maria.

Then toward Thomas.

“Who… told… you?”

Alexander held up the documents.

“We found the payments.”

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

Maria leaned forward.

“Mrs. Vance, was my little brother there?”

Evelyn began crying.

“Yes.”

Maria's heart broke.

She had spent her childhood believing Isabella had abandoned her only through death.

Now she was discovering that her mother had given birth to another child, and the woman Maria had protected at the gala had helped finance his secret upbringing.

“Did you know he was my brother?” Maria whispered.

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.”

Alexander's voice trembled.

“Mother, why?”

Evelyn struggled to speak.

“Richard… threatened… him.”

Thomas moved closer to the screen.

“Tell them about the agreement.”

Evelyn looked at him sharply.

Alexander turned.

“What agreement?”

Thomas sighed.

“Richard agreed not to reveal the child's identity if Evelyn kept the trust investigation from becoming public.”

Detective Bennett immediately spoke.

“That sounds like coercion. We need the original agreement.”

Evelyn nodded weakly.

“Study… drawer.”

Alexander frowned.

“Which drawer?”

“Thomas's… old… study.”

Marcus looked toward Alexander.

“The brass cabinet?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Behind… portrait.”

Alexander remembered the wooden box he had found in his father's study.

The letter.

The photographs.

The hidden brass key.

But he had never examined the back of the cabinet.

Marcus contacted the estate security team.

Within minutes, they located a concealed compartment containing a sealed envelope.

Inside was a handwritten agreement bearing Richard Sterling's signature.

The document referred to a minor identified only as Subject A.V.-2.

Alexander read it in disbelief.

Richard had promised not to disclose the child's whereabouts or interfere with his care.

In exchange, the Vance family would suspend certain efforts to challenge the blue trust's management.

Maria looked toward Thomas.

“You let Richard use a child to silence you.”

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to keep him alive.”

Maria shook her head.

“You keep saying that.”

Her voice broke.

“But nobody asked what happened to the children after you saved them.”

Grace lowered her eyes.

She knew exactly what Maria meant.

She had spent years believing she was unwanted.

Sofia had grown up without her mother.

And another child had apparently been hidden behind the name of a billionaire who didn't know he existed.

Alexander placed a hand on Maria's shoulder.

“She's right.”

Thomas looked at him.

Alexander continued.

“You protected the family's secrets. You protected the trust. You protected the company's reputation.”

His voice became cold.

“But you never protected the truth.”

Thomas lowered his head.

Evelyn began crying on the screen.

“Alexander… I'm sorry.”

He looked at her.

For a moment, his anger weakened.

She was his mother.

The woman who had raised him after his father's disappearance.

The woman whose frail body he had watched trembling beneath Victoria Sterling's raised hand.

He loved her.

But he no longer knew whether he understood her.

“Mother,” he whispered, “is the boy still alive?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.”

Maria stopped breathing.

“Where is he?”

Evelyn struggled.

“Richard… moved… him.”

Alexander leaned closer.

“When?”

“Three… years.”

Marcus looked at the academy closure date.

“That's when Hollowbrook shut down.”

Evelyn nodded.

Alexander stared.

“Where did Richard take him?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Don't… know.”

Maria's eyes filled with tears.

Another sibling.

Another disappearance.

Another trail leading back to Richard Sterling.

Then Evelyn suddenly reached toward her nurse.

She pointed desperately toward a drawer beside her bed.

The nurse opened it.

Inside was a small envelope.

Evelyn whispered, “For… Maria.”

The nurse held it before the camera.

Maria stared.

Her name was written across the front.

In Isabella's handwriting.

“Where did you get that?” Maria asked.

Evelyn began crying.

“Your… mother.”

Maria's voice trembled.

“When?”

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“Last… month.”

The room fell silent.

Maria stood.

“LAST MONTH?”

Evelyn nodded.

Alexander stared.

“Mother, are you saying Isabella visited you?”

Tears streamed down Evelyn's face.

“Yes.”

Maria gripped the table.

“Then she's alive.”

Evelyn nodded again.

Maria began crying.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Evelyn looked toward Thomas.

Then whispered:
