Chapter 23 - The Photograph That Evelyn Vance Buried

“WHAT HAPPENED TO MY MOTHER AFTER I WAS BORN?”
Gabriel stood in the doorway of the Sterling Estate bedroom, clutching the photograph so tightly its edges bent beneath his fingers.
Richard Sterling stared at him.
Victoria stood beside the desk, her face pale.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Richard stepped inside and closed the door.
“Sit down, Gabriel.”
“No.”
Richard sighed.
“You're making this harder than it needs to be.”
Gabriel's eyes filled with tears.
“You've spent my entire life telling me what to believe. I'm not sitting down until you answer me.”
Richard studied him.
For the first time, Gabriel looked less like the obedient boy Richard had controlled for years.
He looked like someone who was beginning to understand that obedience had cost him his childhood.
Richard slowly removed a photograph from his coat.
He placed it on the desk.
Gabriel approached cautiously.
The image showed a hospital corridor.
A young woman lay unconscious on a medical stretcher.
Two attendants stood beside her.
And at the far end of the corridor stood Evelyn Vance.
Gabriel stared.
“Is that her?”
Richard nodded.
“The woman who gave birth to you.”
Gabriel touched the photograph.
“Why is she unconscious?”
Richard hesitated.
“She had complications.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“What kind of complications?”
Richard turned sharply.
“This doesn't concern you.”
Victoria's expression hardened.
“You involved me the moment you asked me to help find Gabriel.”
Richard looked toward her.
“You were supposed to bring him home.”
“And then what?”
Richard said nothing.
Victoria stepped closer.
“Were you going to hide him again?”
Richard's jaw tightened.
“I'm trying to keep him alive.”
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
He looked down at the photograph.
“Did she die?”
Richard stared.
“No.”
Gabriel stopped breathing.
“She's alive?”
Richard nodded.
Gabriel began crying.
“Where is she?”
Richard looked toward the window.
“Somewhere safe.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“You don't get to use that word anymore.”
Richard's expression darkened.
“You don't understand what happened seventeen years ago.”
“THEN TELL ME!”
Richard flinched.
The boy had never shouted at him like that before.
For a moment, the powerful financier seemed almost uncertain.
Then he spoke quietly.
“Your birth was part of an agreement.”
Gabriel stared.
“What agreement?”
“An arrangement between people who believed the Vance family needed protection.”
Victoria frowned.
“Protection from whom?”
Richard looked at her.
“From Thomas Vance.”
Victoria went still.
Gabriel stared.
“Thomas?”
Richard nodded.
“Thomas discovered financial records that could destroy several families. He intended to use them as leverage.”
Victoria shook her head.
“That's not what you told me.”
Richard turned.
“I didn't tell you everything.”
Gabriel stared at him.
“Then why should I believe you now?”
Richard looked toward the photograph.
“Because Evelyn Vance knows what happened.”
Gabriel's voice trembled.
“Then let me speak to her.”
Richard hesitated.
Finally, he nodded.
“Perhaps it's time.”
Meanwhile, at the Vance Estate, Evelyn sat beside the window of her private medical suite.
The gardens were quiet beneath the gray morning sky.
A nurse adjusted her blanket.
“Are you comfortable, Mrs. Vance?”
Evelyn nodded.
But her eyes remained fixed on the door.
She had been expecting someone.
For seventeen years, she had lived with a secret that frightened her more than the blue trust, the missing money, or Richard Sterling's threats.
She had signed a hospital document.
She had watched a young woman disappear.
And she had allowed a child to grow up believing he belonged to someone else.
A soft knock sounded.
Detective Bennett entered.
“Mrs. Vance?”
Evelyn looked up.
The detective approached gently.
“We need to ask you about a hospital record from seventeen years ago.”
Evelyn's expression changed.
Bennett sat beside her.
“The record lists you as Gabriel's mother.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“We believe that information was falsified,” Bennett continued. “But we need to understand why your name was used.”
Evelyn's lips trembled.
“Richard.”
Bennett nodded.
“Did Richard Sterling ask you to sign the documents?”
Evelyn began crying.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Evelyn struggled to speak.
“Alexander… threatened.”
Bennett leaned closer.
“He threatened your son?”
Evelyn nodded.
The detective waited.
Evelyn slowly continued.
“Thomas… gone. Alexander… thirteen.”
Bennett understood.
Evelyn had been a mother raising a frightened child after her husband's disappearance.
Richard had approached her at the moment she was most vulnerable.
And he had used Alexander's safety as leverage.
“Did you know who Gabriel's biological mother was?”
Evelyn looked away.
Bennett waited.
Finally, Evelyn whispered, “Yes.”
“Can you tell me her name?”
Evelyn began trembling.
The nurse stepped closer.
“Mrs. Vance, we can stop if you're tired.”
Evelyn shook her head.
She wanted to speak.
She had spent too many years remaining silent.
“Not… Isabella,” she whispered.
Bennett nodded.
“We know.”
Evelyn looked toward a photograph of Alexander on the bedside table.
Then she whispered:
“Girl… young.”
Bennett leaned forward.
“How young?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Eighteen.”
The detective felt a chill.
“Was she being coerced?”
Evelyn began crying.
“I… don't… know.”
Bennett spoke gently.
“Did she consent to the arrangement?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
The room fell silent.
Bennett's expression hardened.
Whatever had happened at that hospital, it had not been an ordinary adoption or a simple case of mistaken identity.
A young woman had given birth.
Her name had been erased.
Her child had been hidden.
And powerful adults had made decisions that changed the course of his life.
Bennett leaned closer.
“Mrs. Vance, did you ever see her again?”
Evelyn nodded.
“When?”
“Last… year.”
Bennett froze.
“Where?”
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“Here.”
The detective stared.
“She came to the estate?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Who brought her?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Eleanor.”
Bennett felt her stomach tighten.
Dr. Eleanor Price.
The same woman who had supervised Gabriel's false identity training.
The same woman now suspected of working inside the estate under the name Nora Ellis.
Bennett immediately contacted Marcus.
“Check every visitor record from the past eighteen months. Look for a woman accompanied by Nora Ellis.”
Marcus answered.
“We're reviewing them now.”
Bennett turned back toward Evelyn.
“Why did she come?”
Evelyn began crying harder.
“Wanted… son.”
Gabriel's mother had come looking for him.
And Evelyn had known.
Bennett lowered her voice.
“Did you help her?”
Evelyn shook her head.
The detective waited.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Couldn't.”
Bennett felt a wave of sadness.
Another mother had come searching for a stolen child.
Another opportunity to tell the truth had passed.
And now Gabriel was seventeen years old, trapped between people who claimed to love him while refusing to tell him who he was.
Suddenly, Marcus called.
“Detective, we found the visitor record.”
Bennett stood.
“Who was she registered as?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Nora Ellis brought her in as a private medical consultant.”
“Name?”
Marcus answered:
“CLAIRE WHITMORE.”
Bennett frowned.
“Do we have a photograph?”
“Yes.”
He sent it.
Bennett opened the image.
A thin woman with dark hair stood beside the estate's service entrance.
Her face was partly turned away.
But the resemblance to Gabriel was unmistakable.
Bennett looked toward Evelyn.
“Is this her?”
Evelyn began sobbing.
“Yes.”
The detective studied the image.
Then noticed the visitor's signature.
It had been crossed out.
Beneath it, in a different handwriting, someone had added another name.
Bennett enlarged the image.
Her expression changed.
The replacement signature read:
ISABELLA SANTOS.
Bennett stared.
Someone had deliberately used Isabella's identity to conceal Gabriel's biological mother.
She turned toward Evelyn.
“Mrs. Vance, who changed the visitor record?”
Evelyn looked toward the doorway.
Fear filled her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“THE WOMAN… WHO CAME… BACK.”
Bennett frowned.
“Eleanor Price?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
The detective leaned closer.
“Then who?”
Evelyn's lips trembled.
And with enormous effort, she whispered:
May you like
“VICTORIA.”
