Chapter 26 - The Brother Who Returned From the Dead

“YOUR BROTHER ORDERED A CHILD TO STEAL MY LIFE—AND YOU KEPT HIS EXISTENCE SECRET?”
Alexander Vance's voice echoed through his father's study.
Outside the tall windows, rain swept across the manicured lawns of the Vance Estate. Thunder rolled over the distant hills, and the grandfather clock near the fireplace struck eleven.
Thomas Vance stood beside the desk, staring at the photograph of Edward.
For twenty-two years, he had lived with the knowledge that his older brother was dangerous. But he had never imagined Edward would return to finish what he started.
“Alexander,” Thomas whispered, “there are things about Edward you don't understand.”
Alexander laughed without humor.
“Then explain them. Because every time I think I've reached the bottom of this nightmare, someone in this family opens another door.”
Maria Santos stood beside Detective Rachel Bennett, watching the two men face each other.
Thomas looked at his son.
“Edward was supposed to inherit everything.”
Alexander frowned.
“What?”
“Your grandfather intended to make Edward the controlling heir of Vance Global. He was older, brilliant, and ruthless. Everyone believed he would eventually lead the company.”
“Then what happened?”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“He discovered that our father was secretly moving charitable funds into private accounts. Edward threatened to expose him unless he was given complete control.”
Bennett stepped forward.
“Are you saying Edward was involved in the original financial fraud?”
Thomas nodded.
“He helped design it. Then he tried to use it against our father.”
Alexander stared at him.
“And you?”
“I tried to stop them.”
“By disappearing?”
Thomas looked devastated.
“No. I disappeared because Edward threatened to destroy Evelyn and you.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“That sounds familiar.”
Thomas flinched.
Richard Sterling had used the same threat against Evelyn years later.
The same fear.
The same silence.
The same pattern of powerful men using children to control their parents.
Maria folded her arms.
“Then why did Edward help you disappear?”
Thomas hesitated.
“Because he wanted everyone to believe I was dead. Once I was gone, he thought he could control the company through Richard.”
Bennett looked at the photograph again.
“But the plan failed.”
Thomas nodded.
“Your grandfather died. The board appointed temporary trustees. Evelyn refused to surrender Alexander's inheritance.”
Alexander looked toward the family portrait hanging above the fireplace.
He remembered being thirteen, standing beside his mother while strangers in expensive suits discussed his future as though he were a piece of property.
He had believed those people were protecting him.
Now he wondered how many had been waiting for him to disappear.
“Why Gabriel?” Alexander asked.
Thomas's face changed.
“Because Edward couldn't simply take your place. The family trust required a direct successor under certain circumstances.”
Bennett frowned.
“Edward was Thomas's brother. Why wouldn't he qualify?”
“Because our father amended the trust shortly before his death. Edward had been excluded from direct control after the fraud allegations.”
Alexander stared.
“So Edward needed someone he could control.”
“Yes.”
“A child.”
Thomas nodded.
“A child whose identity could be manipulated.”
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
“Gabriel never had a chance.”
Thomas looked at her.
“No.”
Marcus entered carrying a tablet.
“Detective, we found something in the old corporate archives.”
Bennett turned.
“What?”
“Edward Vance's death certificate was issued twenty-three years ago, but the supporting documents are missing. His estate was transferred to a private foundation registered overseas.”
Alexander frowned.
“Who controlled the foundation?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Richard Sterling.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Of course.”
Bennett continued examining the documents.
“The foundation made payments to Hollowbrook Academy for seventeen years. Every payment was marked as educational support.”
Maria looked up.
“Gabriel's education?”
Marcus nodded.
“And Dr. Eleanor Price's consulting fees.”
Alexander clenched his jaw.
“Edward paid for everything.”
“Through Richard,” Bennett replied. “That's what the records suggest.”
Suddenly, Marcus's phone vibrated.
He answered, listened, and turned pale.
“Detective, the traffic camera system found the SUV.”
Bennett straightened.
“Where?”
“Northbound near the old Blackwater Bridge.”
Thomas's expression changed immediately.
“No.”
Alexander turned.
“What?”
Thomas stepped backward.
“Edward owns property near Blackwater.”
Bennett looked at him.
“What kind of property?”
Thomas swallowed.
“An abandoned psychiatric hospital.”
Maria felt cold.
“Is that where Gabriel is?”
Thomas looked toward the rain.
“It's where Edward took me the night I disappeared.”
Alexander stared.
“What happened there?”
Thomas's hands began trembling.
For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.
Then he whispered, “He gave me a choice. Sign away the company or watch my family suffer.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“And you refused?”
Thomas nodded.
“So he locked me inside.”
The room went silent.
Maria stared at him.
“How did you escape?”
Thomas looked toward the fireplace.
“Isabella helped me.”
Maria froze.
“My mother?”
Thomas nodded.
“She found the hospital records and arranged my escape. That's when Edward began hunting her.”
Alexander felt his anger shift into something darker.
For years, he had blamed his father for abandoning the family.
Now he was discovering that Thomas had been trapped in a war that began before Alexander was born.
But the lies still hurt.
“Why didn't you come home afterward?” Alexander asked quietly.
Thomas looked at him.
“Because Edward had photographs of you leaving school. Every day. For months.”
Alexander stopped breathing.
“He told me that if I returned, you would disappear next.”
Maria covered her mouth.
Bennett looked grim.
“We need to locate Gabriel immediately.”
Marcus nodded.
“State police are being contacted. We have enough information to request a search of the property.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“I'm going.”
Bennett shook her head.
“Not without coordination.”
“He's seventeen.”
“And rushing into a location controlled by a man who has spent decades manipulating your family could put Gabriel at greater risk.”
Alexander looked at Maria.
She nodded.
“She's right. But we can't abandon him.”
Bennett met their eyes.
“We won't.”
At that moment, Alexander's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke calmly.
“Hello, Alexander.”
Alexander froze.
The voice was almost identical to Thomas's.
“Edward?”
A quiet laugh.
“Your father always did have trouble keeping family secrets.”
Alexander gripped the phone.
“Where's Gabriel?”
“Safe for now.”
“If you hurt him—”
“Careful, nephew. Threats are an unfortunate family tradition.”
Alexander's jaw tightened.
“What do you want?”
Edward paused.
“The same thing I've wanted for twenty-three years.”
“The company?”
“Something far more important.”
Alexander frowned.
“What?”
Edward's voice became cold.
“The original Blue Trust ledger.”
Bennett signaled for Alexander to keep talking.
Alexander glanced toward the detective.
“Why?”
“Because your father stole something from me.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“Edward!”
A long silence followed.
Then Edward laughed.
“Thomas. Still hiding behind your son?”
Thomas's voice trembled.
“Let Gabriel go.”
Edward sighed.
“You always were sentimental.”
“HE'S A CHILD!”
“He's seventeen. Old enough to learn the truth.”
Alexander stared.
“What truth?”
Edward paused.
Then said something that made Thomas stagger backward.
“GABRIEL ISN'T THE FIRST BOY WE TRAINED TO REPLACE A VANCE HEIR.”
Alexander froze.
Maria looked at Thomas.
“What?”
Edward continued.
“Ask your father about the child who disappeared from the estate thirty-five years ago.”
Thomas whispered, “Don't.”
Edward laughed softly.
“THE CHILD YOUR FAMILY ERASED WASN'T A STRANGER, ALEXANDER.”
The call ended.
Alexander slowly turned toward Thomas.
His father was crying.
“Dad?”
Thomas shook his head.
Alexander's voice became a whisper.
“Who was the child?”
Thomas looked toward the family portrait.
Then whispered:
May you like
“MY FIRST SON.”
