Chapter 29 - The Promise a Child Was Forced to Make

“HE TOLD ME TO KILL A BROTHER I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW EXISTED?”
Marcus stared at Detective Bennett.

The study seemed to shrink around him.

For thirty-five years, he had carried fragments of childhood memories.

A dark room.

A man's voice.

A promise he couldn't remember making.

Now those fragments were beginning to form a terrible picture.

Thomas Vance stepped toward him.

“Daniel…”

Marcus raised a hand.

“Don't.”

Thomas stopped.

Marcus's voice trembled.

“I need to know what happened.”

Bennett nodded.

“The recording has been preserved as evidence. We can review it with you, but you don't have to watch it now.”

Marcus looked toward Alexander.

His younger brother.

The man he had protected for fifteen years.

The person Edward had apparently wanted him to destroy.

“I want to see it.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“Marcus, you were a child.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I know. But I need to understand why Edward chose me.”

Bennett looked toward Thomas.

“Do you recognize the location?”

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Blackwater Hospital.”

The detective opened the video on a secure tablet.

The footage was grainy.

A small boy sat at a metal table.

His dark hair was neatly combed.

His hands were folded in his lap.

Marcus stared.

“That was me.”

The boy looked frightened.

A man's voice came from behind the camera.

“Daniel, do you know why you're here?”

The child shook his head.

“Because your father doesn't want you.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Thomas began crying.

The voice continued.

“But I want to help you.”

The child looked up.

“Can I see my mommy?”

“Soon.”

The boy's face brightened.

“Promise?”

“Only if you do something for me.”

“What?”

The man behind the camera leaned closer.

“You have a little brother.”

The child frowned.

“A baby?”

“Yes.”

“Can I meet him?”

“Maybe.”

The voice became colder.

“But your little brother is going to take everything that belongs to you.”

The child shook his head.

“I don't want anything.”

“You will.”

The boy began crying.

“I just want my mommy.”

The man behind the camera spoke softly.

“Then promise me you'll do whatever I ask when the time comes.”

The child hesitated.

“Will you take me home?”

“Yes.”

The boy nodded.

“Okay.”

The man continued.

“Even if I ask you to hurt your brother?”

The child began crying harder.

“I don't want to hurt anyone.”

The voice sharpened.

“Daniel.”

The boy flinched.

“Promise.”

The child whispered, “I promise.”

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Marcus stood motionless.

Then he slowly sat down.

His hands were trembling.

“I remember that room.”

Thomas approached.

“Daniel…”

Marcus shook his head.

“I remember the smell. The lights. The sound of the door locking.”

Maria's eyes filled with tears.

She had spent years believing her family was broken because Isabella disappeared.

Now she was watching another family discover how thoroughly its children had been manipulated.

Alexander looked toward Marcus.

“You didn't promise anything freely.”

Marcus stared at him.

Alexander continued.

“You were a child. You were frightened. Edward used your mother to control you.”

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“But I worked for him.”

“You also protected me.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

Marcus looked toward Bennett.

“There was another recording.”

The detective stared.

“How do you know?”

Marcus swallowed.

“Because I remember being brought back to that room when I was sixteen.”

Thomas went pale.

“What happened?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Edward showed me photographs of Alexander. He told me I had a choice.”

Alexander stared.

“What choice?”

Marcus looked directly at him.

“Join his organization or watch him destroy the only family I had left.”

Bennett frowned.

“Who was your family then?”

Marcus swallowed.

“My adoptive parents.”

Maria felt cold.

“Did Edward threaten them?”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

Alexander clenched his jaw.

“And you agreed?”

Marcus nodded.

“I became his courier. Later, I worked security assignments for companies he controlled.”

Bennett took notes.

“Did you commit crimes for him?”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I transported sealed packages. I delivered documents. I didn't always know what was inside.”

Bennett nodded.

“We'll need a full statement.”

Marcus looked toward Alexander.

“I was supposed to gain access to your company. Edward wanted information about your routines.”

Alexander stared.

“And you gave it to him?”

Marcus hesitated.

“At first.”

The room went silent.

Alexander stepped backward.

“How much?”

Marcus's voice broke.

“Your schedule. The names of your drivers. Your office security procedures.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

Maria watched his expression.

He was fighting anger.

But beneath it was something worse.

Grief.

The man he trusted most had once helped the person trying to destroy him.

Marcus continued.

“Then I discovered Edward was preparing to make you disappear.”

Alexander looked up.

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“And you stopped helping him?”

“Yes.”

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“I destroyed the access codes he had. I changed your security protocols. I moved you away from several events he was monitoring.”

Alexander remembered those incidents.

Marcus insisting on different routes.

Canceled appearances.

Unexpected security upgrades.

He had complained about the inconvenience.

Now he realized those decisions might have saved his life.

“Why didn't you tell me?” Alexander whispered.

Marcus looked devastated.

“Because I thought you'd never trust me again.”

Alexander stared.

“And now?”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“Now I don't know if you should.”

For a long moment, Alexander said nothing.

Then he stepped closer.

“I don't know what happens next.”

Marcus nodded.

“I understand.”

“But I know Edward wanted us to hate each other.”

Marcus looked up.

Alexander continued.

“And I'm not going to give him that.”

Marcus began crying.

Thomas covered his face.

For the first time in decades, his two sons stood together.

Not because the past had been forgiven.

But because they refused to let Edward control their future.

Suddenly, Bennett's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“Go ahead.”

She listened.

Then turned toward Alexander.

“We have a new development.”

Alexander straightened.

“Gabriel?”

“Possibly. Investigators recovered another recording from Blackwater.”

Marcus looked up.

“What recording?”

Bennett hesitated.

“It was made three days ago.”

Maria's heart pounded.

“Is Gabriel in it?”

Bennett nodded.

“Yes.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Show us.”

The detective opened the video.

Gabriel sat in a chair inside the same observation room.

His face was pale.

His hands trembled.

A man stood behind him.

Edward Vance.

The resemblance to Thomas was unmistakable.

Edward leaned toward the camera.

“Alexander, if you're watching this, congratulations. You've discovered the first part of the truth.”

Alexander clenched his jaw.

Edward continued.

“But your father hasn't told you everything.”

Thomas went pale.

Edward smiled.

“Thirty-five years ago, Daniel was the first child we prepared.”

Marcus stared.

The video continued.

“Seventeen years ago, Gabriel became the second.”

Maria felt cold.

Edward leaned closer.

“And now the final transfer is almost complete.”

Alexander frowned.

“What transfer?”

Edward smiled.

“The one your mother authorized.”

Evelyn's name again.

The same agreement.

The same forged records.

The same nightmare.

Edward continued.

“You think this is about money. You think I want your company.”

He laughed softly.

“Alexander, the company was never the prize.”

The camera moved.

A large wall monitor appeared behind Gabriel.

On it was a list of names.

Some were familiar.

Richard Sterling.

Eleanor Price.

Thomas Vance.

Isabella Santos.

Evelyn Vance.

Then Alexander saw another name.

His own.

Beneath it were two words.

STATUS: REPLACED.

Alexander stopped breathing.

Edward looked directly into the camera.

“YOU'RE TOO LATE, ALEXANDER.”

The screen changed.

A financial authorization appeared.

It bore Alexander's signature.

But Alexander had never signed it.

Marcus stepped forward.

“That's one of Gabriel's practice signatures.”

Bennett stared.

Edward smiled.

“By the time you understand what happened, every bank, every trustee, and every corporate officer will have received documents proving you are no longer authorized to act.”

Alexander clenched his jaw.

“That's fraud.”

Bennett nodded.

“And we can challenge it.”

But Edward wasn't finished.

He leaned toward Gabriel.

“Tell them what you signed.”

Gabriel began crying.

“I didn't want to.”

Edward's expression hardened.

“Tell them.”

Gabriel looked into the camera.

“Alexander… I'm sorry.”

Maria covered her mouth.

Gabriel continued.

“I signed the documents.”

Alexander stared.

“What documents?”

Gabriel began sobbing.

“The ones that say I'm Alexander Vance.”

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus received an alert.

His face went pale.

“Alexander…”

Alexander turned.

“What?”

Marcus looked at the screen.

“Vance Global's emergency trustees have received a continuity notice.”

Bennett stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

Marcus swallowed.

“IT SAYS ALEXANDER VANCE IS LEGALLY INCAPACITATED.”

Alexander froze.

Marcus continued.

May you like

“AND THE PERSON AUTHORIZED TO ASSUME CONTROL IS ALREADY INSIDE THE COMPANY.”
