Chapter 5 - Gwen Opens The Blue Folder Full Of Receipts

Gwen reached into her canvas tote bag and pulled out a thick, bright blue accordion folder labeled with crisp white tabs.

She unlatched the elastic band, letting the massive stack of paper fan out across the folding table for everyone to see.

“Eight years of catering receipts, medical bill transfers, holiday gifts, and emergency loans,” Gwen stated, her voice cutting through the silence.

Heather, Brandon’s sister, pushed her way to the front of the crowd, her eyes wide with shock and sudden panic.

“What is that trash? Are you seriously airing our family’s private business in public right now?” Heather shrieked.

“It’s not trash, Heather; it’s the exact paper trail proving every single dollar your family has stolen from me,” Gwen replied firmly.

Gwen pulled out a pink receipt from last Christmas, holding it up high for the remaining guests to inspect.

“This is the four hundred dollars I spent on your mother’s designer handbag, which Brandon promised to reimburse within a week,” Gwen said.

She pulled out another transfer slip from six months prior.

“And this is the twelve hundred dollars I paid for Rosalind’s dental surgery when Brandon claimed his accounts were frozen.”

Brandon lunged forward, trying to snatch the blue folder out of Gwen’s hands, but she stepped back gracefully.
