Chapter 4 - The District Attorney’s Wife Witnesses The Cheap Setup

Mrs. Vance, the district attorney’s wife, stepped across the threshold into the cramped community center room.
She picked up one of the red noodle cups, reading the budget label with an expression of profound disbelief.
“Seventy years old, Rosalind? And this is how your son and daughter-in-law choose to celebrate your milestone birthday?” Mrs. Vance asked sharply.
Rosalind forced a rigid, trembling smile, desperately trying to salvage what little dignity she had left.
“It’s a quirky family joke, Elizabeth! You know how young people love these ironic retro themes nowadays,” Rosalind lied through her teeth.
Gwen stepped forward, pulling a printed receipt from her pocket and laying it flat on the folding table.
“There is no joke here, Mrs. Vance; Brandon transferred exactly two hundred dollars and told me to figure it out,” Gwen announced clearly.
“He also told me I was embarrassing him by bringing up the thousands of dollars he still owes me,” Gwen added.
Mrs. Vance looked from Gwen to Brandon, her eyes narrowing with professional and social disgust.

“My husband prosecutes financial fraud for a living, Brandon, and public deceit is an ugly look for a corporate manager,” Mrs. Vance noted coldly.
With that, the district attorney’s wife dropped the noodle cup back onto the table and walked out of the room without another word.
