Gwen stepped back, dodging his grasp with effortless grace as she shifted her grocery bags securely in her arms.

“Your life isn't falling apart, Brandon; it’s simply being adjusted to match your actual financial reality,” Gwen corrected him.

“What about us? Eight years of marriage down the drain over a stupid birthday party?” Brandon choked out, desperation edging into anger.

“Those eight years ended the moment you handed me two hundred dollars and told me to figure it out,” Gwen replied sharply.

With that, Gwen turned her back on him, walking down the sidewalk toward her apartment building without looking back once.
