Chapter 20 - Brandon Faces Total Financial Ruin At His Job

Up in San Diego, Brandon sat in a fluorescent-lit cubicle that was half the size of his old executive corner office.

His new manager tossed a stack of quarterly reports onto his desk with a cold, unimpressed expression.

“If these audit numbers aren't corrected by five o’clock, Brandon, don't bother coming back on Monday,” his boss warned before walking away.

Brandon rubbed his temples, feeling a blinding migraine throbbing behind his eyes as his entire professional credibility dissolved.

Every financial institution in California had flagged his social security number due to the federal fraud investigation stemming from the divorce.

He couldn't rent a decent apartment, buy a reliable car, or even secure a basic credit card without hitting a brick wall of rejection.

He pulled out his phone, staring at an old contact photo of Gwen smiling brightly on a sunny beach before everything went wrong.

He realized too late that she had been the only real asset holding his chaotic, superficial life together.

Now, she was thousands of miles away living her best life while he drowned in the consequences of his own arrogance.

He reached out to tap her phone number, forgetting for a split second that he had been blocked permanently months ago.
