Chapter 2 - Brandon’s Public Confession Shocks The Entire Family

Brandon stepped into the community center room, his golf jacket still unzipped and a careless smirk plastered across his face.

He expected to find a fully catered banquet paid for by Gwen’s savings, just like every other family event in the past eight years.

Instead, his eyes landed on thirty red cups of instant noodles sitting in neat, pathetic rows on the folding table.

“What is the meaning of this joke, Gwen?” Brandon demanded, his voice echoing loudly off the bare cinderblock walls.

Gwen didn't flinch, standing calmly beside the electric kettle as she looked straight into her husband’s widening eyes.

“You gave me two hundred dollars for thirty guests, Brandon; this is exactly what two hundred dollars buys,” she replied evenly.

The silence in the room grew heavy, broken only by the low hum of the refrigerator in the corner.

Brandon flushed a deep shade of crimson, realizing the trap he had carelessly walked right into.

“I told you to figure it out using your own credit card like you always do!” Brandon shouted defensively.

“I’m done paying for your family’s hypocrisy with money I earned working double shifts,” Gwen answered without raising her voice.
