Mrs. Thomas stepped past him into the study, her sharp eyes immediately spotting the open leather ledger on the desk.

“So, the loyal little maid has been rummaging through private family archives,” Mrs. Thomas sneered, glaring at Clara.

“She didn't have to rummage very far to find a trail of blood and forged wire transfers spanning two decades,” Thomas countered sharply.

Mrs. Thomas let out a cold, high-pitched laugh that lacked any warmth or humanity.

“You think you can just walk into Pine Ridge and rescue a deranged girl who doesn't even remember her own name?” she mocked.

“She is my flesh and blood, and she remembers everything she needs to know about the night you tried to kill her,” Thomas roared.

Mrs. Thomas stepped backward toward the door, her hand slipping inside her velvet pocket to grip a concealed pearl-handled revolver.

“You won't make it past the front gates of the sanatorium, Thomas; those men are paid to bury problems permanently,” she warned.

Clara reacted instantly, lunging forward to knock Mrs. Thomas’s arm upward just as the pistol fired into the ceiling.
