Chapter 5 - Clara Explains The Dark Truth About His Daughter
Thomas sank heavily into his leather armchair, staring up at the portrait of his daughter as the fire began to die down.
“Tell me everything you know, Clara, from the very beginning... how did you find out about any of this?” Thomas asked quietly.
Clara pulled up a small wooden stool, sitting opposite him with a solemn, determined expression on her face.
“My older sister worked as a senior nurse at Pine Ridge Sanatorium before she mysteriously vanished three months ago,” Clara began.
“Before she disappeared, she mailed me a package containing that silver ID tag and a journal detailing your daughter’s confinement,” she continued.
“She wrote that your daughter remembers the night of the crash, and she remembers the woman who pushed her into the ravine,” Clara revealed.
Thomas felt a cold sweat break out across his neck as the horrifying implications of her words settled into his mind.
“My wife tried to murder her own stepdaughter twenty-two years ago to secure sole control of the family trust,” Thomas whispered in sheer horror.
“And she’s been paying a corrupt medical staff to cover up her crime every single day since then,” Clara added grimly.
Thomas stood up, walking over to the bookshelf and pulling open a secret compartment hidden behind the framed vintage U.S. flag.
