Chapter 14 - Arriving At The Isolated Sanatorium Deep In The Woods

The Pine Ridge Sanatorium looked more like a maximum-security penitentiary than a medical healing facility under the stormy sky.

Flashing red security lights cast an eerie crimson glow across the barred windows of the upper psychiatric wards.

“The patient transfer van is parked by the service loading dock around the back,” Clara whispered, motioning toward the west wing.

Thomas nodded, leading the way along the side of the brick building while keeping out of range of the rotating searchlights.

As they rounded the corner, they spotted two orderlies in white medical coats loading a stretcher into the back of a black transit van.

strapped securely to the stretcher was a young woman with dark hair and a stark white bandage across her left eyebrow.

Even from a distance, Thomas recognized the distinctive scar immediately; it was the exact face from the portrait above his study mantel.

“Isabella!” Thomas shouted involuntarily, breaking cover and rushing across the concrete loading dock.

The orderlies spun around in shock, one of them drawing a heavy-duty stun baton as Thomas closed the distance.

“Stop right there! Federal property! Back off or face immediate termination!” the lead orderly barked aggressively.
