Chapter 12 - The Cold Silence That Follows The Devastating Accusation

Inside the moving vehicle, the silence was only broken by the rhythmic swish of the windshield wipers cutting through the storm.

“If we don't intercept that transfer van, we might lose her in the mountain wilderness forever,” Thomas said, his voice laced with dread.

“We will intercept them, Mr. Thomas; my sister left me a backup map of every hidden tunnel beneath that facility,” Clara reassured him.

Thomas glanced sideways at her, a glimmer of hope piercing through the overwhelming darkness of the night.

“Your sister was remarkably thorough; she saved more lives than she ever realized,” Thomas acknowledged gratefully.

“She knew what kind of monsters ran that place, and she prepared for this exact moment,” Clara whispered, clutching the silver ID tag.

The SUV surged around a sharp mountain curve, its high-beam headlights cutting through the dense fog blanketing the Vermont border.

Ahead of them, the iron gates of the Pine Ridge Sanatorium loomed out of the darkness like the jaws of a concrete monster.

Thomas killed his headlights, coasting the heavy vehicle off the asphalt onto an overgrown logging trail hidden by pine trees.
