Chapter 2 - The Shocking Revelation Behind The Tarnished Silver ID Tag

The crackling fireplace cast long, flickering shadows across the mahogany panels of the old study as Thomas stared at the small silver tag.
His fingers trembled around the tarnished metal, the stamped initials I.V. burning into his vision like an open flame.
Clara stood motionless beneath the gilded portrait of the little girl with the distinctive scar through her eyebrow, her breath fogging slightly in the chilling air.
“Where did you find this?” Thomas finally managed to speak, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly whisper that echoed through the quiet room.
“In the housekeeper’s quarters, hidden inside a locked floorboard beneath the old linen chests,” Clara replied without breaking eye contact.
Thomas felt a violent wave of dizziness crash over him, forcing him to grip the edge of the heavy oak desk to steady his shaking legs.
“My wife told me she died in a tragic car accident twenty-two years ago while visiting her family in upstate New York,” Thomas choked out.
“Your wife lied, Mr. Thomas,” Clara said softly, stepping closer to the fireplace as the flames danced across the stone hearth.
“She didn't die; she survived the crash with that very scar you see painted above the mantelpiece,” Clara revealed with absolute conviction.
Thomas looked back up at the portrait of his long-lost daughter, the eyes of the painted child seeming to pierce directly into his soul.
“If she’s alive... why hasn't she come home? Why would my own wife hide her away in a secret facility?” Thomas demanded, his voice cracking.

“Because control is everything to Mrs. Thomas, and an heir with a surviving memory of that night was a threat to her inheritance,” Clara explained.
