Back outside the study doors, the dark silhouette glided silently across the polished marble flooring of the grand foyer.
Mrs. Thomas paused near the sweeping staircase, a cold, calculated smile touching the corners of her painted lips.
She had heard enough through the reinforced glass to know that her decades-long deception was finally unraveling.
“Let them chase ghosts in Vermont,” she murmured softly to herself, adjusting the diamond brooch pinned to her velvet collar.
She walked toward her private east wing suite, her mind already calculating how to liquidate the remaining trust assets before morning.

She opened her mahogany bedroom door, stepping into the dark interior only to find her personal safe standing wide open.
Her emergency passports, bearer bonds, and backup flash drives were entirely gone from the velvet-lined compartment.
