Chapter 48 - The Mark of Cerberus

Claire froze, her heart stopping in her throat. She looked down at Leo.

Beneath the boy’s soft skin, on the underside of his right wrist, a faint, glowing geometric pattern was pulsing with pale blue bioluminescence. It was not a tattoo—it was a subcutaneous micro-array, implanted before Dante had ever rescued him, awakening in response to the terminal’s biometric handshake.

"What did you do to him?" Dante roared, taking two predatory steps toward Eleanor, his hands closing around the collar of her uniform, lifting the aristocratic matriarch clean off the steel deck.

Eleanor did not flinch, even as Dante’s grip choked the air from her lungs. "He isn't just the key, Dante... he is the beacon. The autonomous protocol doesn't need satellite dishes. The fleet ships track the bio-frequency of his blood. Wherever you take him, they will follow. They will rise from the deep, crushing every harbor, every city, every refuge you seek, until he is returned to the command cradle."

"Turn it off," Claire commanded, stepping forward, the muzzle of her weapon pressed directly between Eleanor’s eyes. "Turn it off, or I swear to God I will pull this trigger."

"You can't turn off biology, my sweet child," Eleanor laughed, a raspy, dying sound. "The only way to silence the beacon... is to end the bloodline."

Dante hurled Eleanor against the central mainframe console. The glass screens shattered behind her, sparks showering across her shoulders. "We will find a way to purge the implant. But you won't live to see it."

Suddenly, the entire mountain shuddered beneath their feet.

It was not a tremor from the reactors. It was an external impact—a catastrophic underwater detonation that shook the very foundation of the volcanic island. The reinforced glass floor beneath them hairline-cracked with a sound like a rifle shot.

"Boss!" the encrypted comms earpiece in Dante’s ear crackled with the panicked voice of the *Vanguard's* commanding officer. "Hostile contacts breaching the surface perimeter! Three unidentified super-heavy submersibles have surrounded the island! They aren't responding to NATO or syndicate codes—they're executing autonomous ramming maneuvers against the sea gates! The entire subterranean base is collapsing!"

"Evacuate the docking cavern now!" Dante barked into the mic. "Bring the *Vanguard* to the surface extraction coordinates!"

"Too late, Don Moretti," Eleanor whispered from the floor, coughing up blood as she tapped a hidden trigger sewn into the seam of her sleeve. "If I cannot rule the fleet... the fleet will bury us all."

Behind her, a massive steel blast shield slammed down between Eleanor and the rest of the sanctum, sealing her inside the reactor core as emergency bulkhead alarms wailed throughout the crumbling facility.
