Chapter 36 - The Lion in the Cradle

The sight of the infant on the bridge of a sinking nuclear submarine froze the air in Claire’s lungs.

Leo was not crying now. His tiny face was flushed, his enormous dark eyes—so eerily identical to Dante’s—darting between the flashing red warning lights and the figures standing in the smoke. Around his small neck, the silver pendant Claire’s sister had given him glowed against his white onesie.

"Don't move, Admiral," Sterling said softly, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and unhinged euphoria. He had an ivory-handled revolver pressed against the soft temple of the baby. "Lower your weapons, both of you. Or the boy dies before this ship hits crush depth."

Dante stopped five paces away. His face was completely devoid of emotion—a terrifying, frozen stillness that Claire recognized as the state Dante entered when he decided a man’s soul was already forfeit.

"Put the boy down, Sterling," Dante said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You wanted the syndicate’s empire. You wanted the launch codes. You have them. Let the child go."

"You still don't understand, do you, Dante?" Sterling laughed, a harsh, cracked sound that bounced off the steel bulkheads. "The syndicate wasn't just an arms syndicate. It was a eugenics initiative! Your bloodline, Moretti! The military intellect of the Ellison lineage combined with the ruthless criminal empire of the Morettis! This child was designed to be the ultimate asset—the heir to both the underground and the deep state!"

Claire stepped forward, her rifle lowered to the deck, her eyes locking onto Sterling with surgical intensity. "My sister died protecting him from you. She was never part of your sick experiment."

"Your sister was weak!" Sterling snarled, pressing the gun closer to Leo. "She grew a conscience! She thought she could hide the boy in the gutter, hand him to a mafia butcher, and disappear! But the bloodline belongs to the shadow council!"

Suddenly, Leo shifted.

The baby’s tiny hand reached out through the blanket, grasping at the air. His little fingers caught the edge of Sterling’s silk tie, tugging it weakly.

Sterling flinched, his grip slipping slightly.

That fraction of a second was all Dante Moretti needed.

Dante did not reach for his gun. He lunged forward with inhuman speed, his uninjured hand grabbing the cylinder of Sterling's revolver, jamming the mechanism so the hammer could not drop.

*CLICK.*

The revolver failed to fire.

With a primal roar, Dante ripped the gun from Sterling’s hand with such violent torque that Sterling's fingers snapped. Simultaneously, Claire dove across the command dais, her arms out-thrust, catching baby Leo as Dante's shoulder slammed into Sterling's chest, driving the traitorous mastermind off the dais and crashing onto the lower deck.

Leo was in Claire’s arms.

The baby let out a tiny, frightened gasp, his little body trembling violently.

Claire pulled him against her tactical vest, her armored gloved hands trembling as she cradled his head. "I have you," Claire whispered, her voice cracking with raw, maternal desperation. "I’ve got you, Leo. Mama’s here. I’ve got you."

The baby looked up into Claire’s tear-filled eyes. His tiny hand reached up, pressing against Claire’s bruised cheek—the exact same gesture he had made in the dimly lit dining room on Pine Street weeks ago.

And instantly, the baby fell completely, beautifully silent.

Across the bridge, a sickening crunch broke the silence.

Dante stood over Sterling. Dante’s boot was planted firmly on Sterling’s shattered chest. Dante looked down at him with eyes as cold as the ocean floor outside.

"You touched my son," Dante whispered.

"Dante... wait!" Sterling choked, blood bubbling on his lips. "The launch sequence... only I know the abort cipher! If I die, the missiles launch!"

Dante didn't hesitate. He raised his .45 and pulled the trigger.
