Chapter 30 - The Trigger in the Dark

"You won't leave this cavern alive, Sterling," Dante snarled, stepping into the light, his pistol leveled at the glass. "You killed Thomas Vance. You tried to murder my son. There isn't an ocean deep enough to hide you from me."
Julian Vance stepped forward to the railing, his face twisted in sneering triumph. "You're too late, Moretti! The override is already engaged! The missile tubes on the *Leviathan* are pressurized. In ten minutes, twenty-four cruise missiles with tactical warheads will launch toward the Atlantic seaboard. And the transponder will broadcast your syndicate’s private communications codes as the launch signature!"
Claire’s eyes swept across the master console beneath the observation deck. The digital countdown was burning red on the central interface:
**09:42... 09:41... 09:40...**
"The fail-safe," Claire whispered to Dante, her mind calculating angles, trajectories, and firing lines in fractions of a second. "The pendant is the only thing that can abort the sequence. But the terminal is locked behind an active kinetic shield."
"Then we break the shield," Dante said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, terrifying devotion. "Cover me."
Before she could speak, Dante broke from cover, sprinting through a hail of automatic gunfire directed from the catwalks, drawing the fire of six mercenary guards away from Claire’s position.
"Fire!" Claire commanded, her DEVGRU team unleashing a coordinated volley that swept the catwalks clear of hostiles.
Claire vaulted over the central railing, hitting the floor in a combat slide that brought her directly to the base of the master terminal. Bullets ricocheted off the steel casing around her. She ripped the silver pendant from her vest pocket and jammed its micro-connector into the terminal’s biometric port.
A crimson light scanned her eye: **IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ADMIRAL C. ELLISON.**
The terminal chimed: **SECONDARY BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION REQUIRED: LIVING INFANT PULSE.**
Claire’s heart stopped.
The terminal wasn't just keyed to the pendant. It required Leo’s live biometric heartbeat signal to confirm the abort command—and Leo was aboard the submarine, three hundred yards away through the pressurized umbilical!
"Claire!" Dante shouted from behind a burning electrical console, returning fire with his pistol, his shoulder bleeding profusely. "What is it?!"
"The abort sequence requires his pulse!" Claire yelled back over the deafening roar of automatic fire. "The signal isn't reaching through the hull!"
At that exact second, the deep subterranean cavern began to shudder violently.
The massive steel blast doors beneath the dry dock began to grind open, revealing the black, freezing expanse of the deep-sea trench. The *Leviathan*’s engines roared to life, churning the water into a boiling maelstrom as the colossal phantom submarine began to slide into the open ocean, its forward missile silos venting white steam.
Up in the observation booth, Sterling raised a detonator in his hand, looking down at Claire with cold, triumphant madness.

"You lose, Admiral," Sterling whispered through the comms.
And then, through Claire’s encrypted earpiece, came the sound of a baby’s frantic cry—and the piercing blare of a proximity alarm screaming inside the USS *Manta*’s command bridge.
