Chapter 33 - The Deep Trenches

The blackness outside the viewport was absolute.

At eight hundred meters beneath the surface of the Atlantic, daylight ceased to exist. The only reality was the rhythmic *ping* of the passive sonar array and the groaning protest of the *Nautilus-4*’s titanium hull as ambient pressure climbed past one thousand pounds per square inch.

"Depth: nine hundred and fifty meters," Claire announced, her hands steady on the dual-throttle flight sticks. Her eyes, hyper-focused, reflected the ghostly green phosphorus of the tactical display. "The *Leviathan* is running silent under electric crawl. Sterling thinks he’s in the clear."

Dante sat beside her, his breathing slow and measured. The pain in his shoulder had settled into a dull, thumping ache, but the adrenaline pulsing through his veins acted like liquid ice. He had wiped the saltwater from his .45, reloaded it with maritime maritime-sealed ammunition, and now checked the chamber.

"Why did you leave the Navy, Claire?" Dante’s voice cut through the hum of the air scrubbers. It was quiet, stripped of the bravado he wore like an Italian suit in the ballrooms of Manhattan.

Claire didn't look away from the sonar screen. "You know why. When the syndicate infiltrated naval intelligence, they tried to use my command to authorize black-budget strikes on civilian targets. When I refused, they framed me for treason. I disappeared into the shadows to protect the only people I had left."

"And then you took a job as a waitress in my restaurant," Dante murmured, his dark eyes studying the sharp, beautiful profile of the woman beside him. "Pine Street. You served coffee with hands that had commanded carrier strike groups."

"I was running recon on you, Dante," Claire confessed, her voice tight. "The Pentagon thought the Moretti family was funding the Syndicate’s deep-sea drone initiative. I took that job to find out if you were a traitor to this country."

"And what did you find?"

Claire glanced at him, her gaze piercing. "I found a ruthless mafia Don who would kill a man with his bare hands for disrespecting his family... but who sat in a dark corner of an empty dining room every single night, rocking an orphaned baby because he couldn't bear to let the boy cry alone."

Dante fell silent. His jaw tightened.

"Leo isn't just an heir, Dante," Claire whispered, her voice softening for a rare, fleeting second. "He touched my face that first night because he recognized something. The pendant around his neck was my sister’s. Before she was murdered by Sterling, she entrusted Leo to you. She knew you were a devil... but she knew you were a devil who kept his promises."

"I promised her the boy would be untouchable," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register of sheer, unadulterated venom. "And I have failed."

"You haven't failed yet," Claire snapped, her military discipline snapping back like a steel trap. "Sonar contact! Twelve o'clock high! We're right on their baffles!"

Through the thick quartz glass of the cockpit, a colossal shadow materialized out of the abyss. The *Leviathan* was massive—a three-hundred-foot stealth ballistic submarine, its black composite hull absorbing the ping of standard radar like a black hole.

"They're venting forward ballast," Claire warned. "Sterling is preparing to level off at launch depth: twelve hundred meters. Once he reaches that shelf, the automated launch sequence fires twelve submarine-launched cruise missiles armed with dirty payloads directly at the eastern seaboard."

"How do we get inside?" Dante asked, unholstering his weapon.

"We don't knock," Claire replied grimly, pushing the propulsion throttles to maximum. "Brace for impact!"
