Chapter 43 - The Gates of Basalt

The lower docking cavern of the Citadel of Ravens was a monument to subterranean brutalism. Massive steel floodgates groaned open beneath the surface, allowing Dante’s armored launch boat to glide into a subterranean grotto carved directly from volcanic rock. Automated floodlights buzzed to life along the catwalks, casting harsh white glare over the oily, stagnant water.

Dante was the first to step onto the wet concrete pier, his tactical boots gripping the slick stone. His customized submachine gun hung at the ready across his chest, his senses dialed to an acute combat pitch. Behind him, Claire stepped ashore, carrying Leo in an armored front tactical harness secured against her chest. The infant wore a padded noise-canceling headset, his wide eyes looking around the cavern with unnerving curiosity rather than fear.

Two dozen private security operatives lined the upper catwalks, their weapons trained down on Dante and Claire. They did not wear military fatigues or syndicate colors; their uniforms were unmarked black composite armor, their faces hidden behind matte-black ballistic masks.

"They're automated legionnaires," Claire whispered under her breath, her eyes flicking across their weapon stances. "Surgical implants, neural overrides. They don't feel pain, and they don't surrender. My mother’s private vanguard."

"They bleed the same as anyone else," Dante murmured back, his fingers resting casually near the trigger guard of his weapon. "Stay behind me. If the shooting starts, you head for the elevator core. I will clear the floor."

At the far end of the docking bay, a heavy blast door slid upward with a pneumatic hiss. Standing in the threshold was a tall, silver-haired man holding a golden pocket watch, flanked by two armed operatives.

"Admiral Vance awaits you in the primary sanctum," the man said in a flat, emotionless tone. "Weapons will remain holstered during transit. Any hostile gesture will result in the immediate deployment of neurotoxin throughout this subterranean sector."

Dante didn't answer. He simply nodded curtly, motioning for Claire to walk half a pace behind him. As they passed beneath the shadows of the upper catwalks, Dante’s peripheral vision mapped every vantage point, every security camera, and every emergency fuel line running along the cavern walls. He had spent his life walking into traps laid by kings and mafiosi alike; the secret was never to avoid the cage, but to ensure you brought enough fire to burn down the entire zoo.

They entered an industrial freight elevator that groaned as it ascended into the bowels of the mountain. The air grew thinner and colder, carrying the sharp, metallic tang of liquid nitrogen cooling systems. Leo stirred against Claire’s chest, reaching out a tiny mitten-clad hand toward Dante’s jacket. Dante reached out, allowing the infant to grip his index finger. The child’s touch was warm, an anchor of pure innocence amid a tomb of concrete and slaughter.

*Ding.*

The elevator doors rolled open, revealing a vast, circular amphitheater suspended above a subterranean abyss. The floor was made of reinforced bulletproof glass, beneath which glowed the massive cooling pools of seven submerged nuclear reactors. At the far side of the room, elevated upon a dais of polished black steel, sat Lady Eleanor Vance.

Surrounding her was a circular bank of holographic displays showing global flight corridors, naval tracking grids, and missile targeting telemetry.

"Welcome home, Claire," Eleanor said, rising slowly from her chair. Her eyes did not linger on her daughter, nor did they look at Dante. They locked directly onto the baby resting against Claire’s chest. "And welcome to the dawn of the new world, Leonardo."
