Chapter 39 - The Surface of the Deep

For ten agonizing minutes, the escape sphere rose in absolute silence.

The violent turbulence of the deep sea slowly subsided into the gentle, swaying motion of ocean swells. The pitch-black water outside the thick quartz glass gradually shifted from inky void to deep navy blue, then to murky aquamarine, until finally—

*CRASH.*

The sphere breached the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, bobbing violently among ten-foot waves beneath a stormy midnight sky.

Inside the capsule, the red emergency lighting gave way to the soft glow of the survival beacons.

Leo was quiet now. Snuggled tightly in the survival harness, his tiny fingers clutched the silver pendant around his neck. Exhaustion had finally overtaken the infant, and he was sleeping soundly, his small chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace.

Claire collapsed against the bulkhead, her dive mask stripped away, her blonde hair soaked and plastered to her face. She closed her eyes, listening to the sound of the ocean rain pelting the titanium hull above them.

Beside her, Dante lay back against the curved wall, his breathing shallow. Claire reached out, pressing a field dressing against his shoulder wound, applying steady pressure.

Dante opened his eyes, looking at her in the dim light.

"You're completely insane, Admiral," Dante murmured, a faint, exhausted smile touching his lips.

"And you're a terrible patient, Don Moretti," Claire retorted softly, her voice thick with emotion. She didn't pull her hand away from his chest. "We survived."

"We survived," Dante agreed. He reached out, his calloused, scarred fingers finding hers, intertwining with an intimacy that neither of them could deny any longer. "What happens now, Claire? The Navy thinks you're a rogue. The Syndicate wants us dead. And our son is the most dangerous secret on the planet."

Claire looked over at sleeping Leo, her gaze softening with unbreakable resolve. "Then we don't hide anymore. We stop running. Together."

Above them, the night sky was suddenly illuminated by the blinding, sweeping beam of a high-powered searchlight.

The heavy, rhythmic *thwip-thwip-thwip* of dual-rotor military helicopters cut through the storm.

Through the capsule’s upper observation port, the colossal gray silhouette of a United States Navy guided-missile destroyer emerged from the fog, flanked by two fast-attack patrol boats.

Over the emergency radio speaker in the capsule, a crisp, commanding voice crackled through the static:

"Unidentified submersible craft, this is the USS *Vanguard*. We have you on visual. Stand by for extraction. Admiral Ellison... welcome home, ma'am."

Claire took a deep breath, looking at Dante. "Looks like my friends got here first."

Dante gave a low, dangerous chuckle, tightening his grip on her hand. "Let's hope they know how to treat their guests."
