Chapter 47 - The Scram Sequence

The sound that followed was like the tearing of the earth itself.
Deep within the subterranean bedrock, four-foot-wide hydraulic valves slammed open, venting millions of gallons of frigid Atlantic seawater directly into the superheated cooling channels of the primary reactors. Plumes of scalding white steam erupted from the floor grates with the force of jet engines, instantly obscuring visibility and setting off catastrophic pressure klaxons.
*WARNING: THERMAL SHOCK IMMINENT. PRIMARY SCRAM INITIATED. ALL FLEET TELEMETRY SEVERED.*
Across the upper sanctum, the holographic displays flickered, distorted, and collapsed into digital static. The crimson radar tracks showing the Second Fleet’s launch corridors vanished from the screens. Hundreds of miles away in the ocean depths, the automated dreadnoughts lost their uplink, their reactor cores automatically slipping back into cold standby dormancy.
"No!"
The screech came from the upper dais. The blast screen slid open, and Lady Eleanor Vance stepped onto the smoking catwalk, holding a heavy tactical sidearm with two hands. Her aristocratic poise was entirely gone, replaced by the rabid madness of a conqueror watching her empire turn to vapor before her eyes.
"You fools!" Eleanor shrieked over the deafening hiss of steam. "You have doomed us all! Without the master transmitter’s active handshake, the secondary fail-safe initiates! You haven't stopped the fleet—you've unleashed the autonomous rogue protocol!"
Dante vaulted over the railing from the level above, landing heavily on the steel platform ten feet from Eleanor. The impact sent a jolt of pain through his fractured ribs, but he did not falter. He rose to his full height, his face smeared with soot and blood, looking like a demon rising from the underworld.
"Lower the weapon, Eleanor," Dante said, his voice cutting through the steam like an executioner’s blade. "Your fleet is sleeping. Your guards are dead. It's over."
Eleanor turned her trembling weapon toward Dante’s chest. "It is never over, Moretti. A Vance does not yield to a common gangster."
Before she could pull the trigger, a single gunshot cracked through the steam from below.
The round struck the frame of Eleanor’s pistol, shattering the weapon and sending it spinning over the railing into the boiling waters below. Eleanor gasped, clutching her bleeding, fractured hand to her chest.
At the edge of the lower platform, Claire stood at the top of the stairs, her smoking SIG Sauer held in a rock-steady combat grip, Leo safe in the carrier against her chest. Her eyes were devoid of mercy.
"You aren't a mother," Claire said, walking up the steps toward the woman who had birthed her. "You aren't an admiral. You're just a monster hiding behind steel and dead men."
Eleanor looked at her daughter, then at Dante, and finally at baby Leo, who looked back at her with wide, unblinking green eyes. Suddenly, Eleanor’s lips curved into a bloody, terrifying smile.

"You think this was the only fortress, Claire?" Eleanor whispered, her voice laced with venomous triumph. "The Cerberus Protocol has already begun. Look at your child. Look at his wrist."
