Chapter 44 - The Genetic Ledger

"He isn't Leonardo to you," Claire said, her voice echoing off the cavernous steel walls. She did not advance beyond the elevator threshold, her stance balanced and deadly. "He is my son. And you are a ghost who overstayed her welcome on earth."
Eleanor descended the steel steps of the dais with measured grace, her footsteps sharp against the metal. Her posture was that of an empress inspecting her court. "A mother’s sentimentality is a pathetic shield, Claire. You think you protected him by running to a diner on Pine Street? You think your meeting with Dante Moretti was an accident of fate?"
Dante’s eyes narrowed, a dark storm brewing in his chest. "Speak clearly, Eleanor. Before I decide this conversation has exceeded its utility."
Eleanor chuckled softly, stopping ten paces away. She produced a silver tablet from the console and tapped it, projecting a three-dimensional DNA double helix into the air between them. Alongside the strand were medical records, covert operative dossiers, and bloodline registries dating back over four decades.
"The Moretti syndicate was never just an Italian crime family," Eleanor said, turning her icy eyes to Dante. "Your grandfather was a naval engineer who worked on the original deep-sea ghost bunker protocols during the Mediterranean crisis. He carried the biometric cipher for the Atlantic fleet’s primary launch codes. When he died, he encoded that cipher into the junk DNA of his offspring. You carried half the key, Dante."
Dante remained impassive, but his mind raced, connecting the fragments of his family’s cryptic history—the hidden accounts, the naval contracts his father had safeguarded at the cost of his life, the bizarre biometric locks on the Moretti estate vault.
"And Claire," Eleanor continued, turning back to her daughter, "carried the other half. The maternal Vance line was engineered to harmonize with the command matrix. Neither of you could activate the Second Fleet alone. Sterling thought he could force the system using brute-force algorithms and Leo’s blood sample, but the matrix requires the living harmonic resonance of the complete genetic lineage. A child born of Dante Moretti and Claire Vance is not just an heir—he is the living biometric root password to seven nuclear super-dreadnoughts."
Leo cooed softly, oblivious to the monstrous burden woven into his very cells. He reached toward the glowing holographic DNA projection, laughing as the light danced across his fingertips.
"You orchestrated our meeting," Claire said, realization hitting her like a physical blow. The diner on Pine Street... the specific neighborhood Dante frequented... the sudden withdrawal of federal surveillance teams three days before Dante walked through the door. "You set me up as bait."
"I set you up to fulfill your destiny!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic veneer fracturing for the first time, revealing the fanatical zeal beneath. "Look at the world above us! Corrupt politicians trading secrets, weak syndicates fighting over scraps of cocaine and shipping ports! The Second Fleet can cleanse the global slate in twenty minutes. With Leo as the biological sovereign, we will hold the throat of every nation on earth. We will build a peace that cannot be broken."
"That isn't peace," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made Eleanor’s armed guards tense their fingers on their triggers. "That’s a graveyard. And my son will never be your executioner."

Eleanor’s eyes turned to flint. "He won't have a choice. Bring me the child."
