Chapter 27 - An Uneasy Alliance

Two hours later, deep inside the officer’s quarters of the USS *Manta*, the ship’s medic finished wrapping the heavy bandages around Dante’s torn shoulder.

Dante sat on the narrow metal bunk, his broad torso mapped with old scars from a lifetime of gangland warfare, but his gaze was fixed entirely on Claire. She sat at the small steel desk opposite him, a bowl of warm broth resting near Leo, whom she had safely placed on a secured cushioned blanket.

"You played the role of a terrified waitress remarkably well," Dante murmured, his voice low and intimate. "The quiet girl who flinched when the glassware dropped."

Claire didn't look up from her datapad. "I wasn't playing a role when I protected your son, Dante. I saw an innocent child trapped in the crosshairs of ruthless men. That part was real."

Dante leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, closing the distance between them. "And what happened between us? The nights in the library? The conversations after Leo fell asleep? Was that tactical reconnaissance, Admiral?"

Claire stopped typing. Slowly, she raised her head, meeting his intense, piercing gaze. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken truths and undeniable friction.

"I am an officer of the United States Navy, Dante," she said softly, but each word carried weight. "You are the head of the largest organized crime syndicate on the eastern seaboard. The law says I should have put you in the brig the second you stepped onto this hull."

"Then why didn't you?" Dante challenged, his voice dropping to a seductive, dangerous rasp. "Why are you keeping me in your quarters? Why did you risk your stars, your career, and your life to pull my son and me out of that swamp?"

Claire stood up, stepping until she was inches away from him, looking down into his dark, unforgiving eyes. "Because you protected the secret that could destroy this country. Because you bled to keep that key away from Vance. And because..." She glanced down at Leo, who was sleeping peacefully, his tiny hand open on the blanket. "...whether you want to admit it or not, we are the only two people who can keep that boy alive."

A soft chime interrupted them. The comms panel on the wall flared red.

"Admiral Ellison to the control room," Commander Ross’s voice echoed with urgent tension. "Sonar just picked up an acoustic contact at sixty fathoms. It's massive, ma'am. And it’s not on any NATO register."
