Chapter 42 - The Phantom Latitude

Thirty-six hours later, the storm had swallowed the horizon.

The *Iron Sovereign*, Dante’s 180-foot ice-class expedition yacht, knifed through twelve-foot swells of ink-black Atlantic water. Rain lashed against the reinforced ballistic glass of the bridge, lightning illuminating the violent sea in jagged flashes of silver. Below the yacht’s waterline, trailing five miles astern, ran Claire’s loyalist stealth-class attack submarine, the *Vanguard*, shadowing their wake like a submerged guardian hound.

Inside the command bridge, Dante stood beside the tactical table, dressed in a black waterproof combat coat. Beside him stood Claire, her tactical harness secured, two suppressed sidearms holstered at her hips. In the secured nursery module directly behind the helm, guarded by Dante’s most trusted Sicilian lieutenants, little Leo slept soundly despite the pitching roll of the ship, cushioned in a shock-absorbing tactical bassinet.

"Radar is picking up massive electromagnetic interference dead ahead," the helmsman called out, fighting the hydraulic wheel as a heavy swell broke over the bow. "Thermal scans show a landmass, boss, but satellite feeds are blacked out. The whole island is shrouded in active military-grade jamming."

Claire leaned over the digital charts, studying the topographic contours of the jagged rocks ahead. "The Citadel of Ravens. It was an abandoned NATO listening post constructed during the 1960s, dug directly into the volcanic basalt. In 2018, all records of its decommissioning vanished from the Pentagon archives. My mother didn't just hide here—she turned it into an automated fortress."

"Can the *Vanguard* launch a pre-emptive torpedo strike against their coastal batteries?" Dante asked, his eyes narrowing through the rain-streaked darkness.

"Not without triggering the failsafe," Claire replied grimly. "If the Citadel’s outer relays detect a hostile acoustic signature from an attack sub, the automated protocols will interpret it as a catastrophic breach. The Second Fleet's launch tubes will vent ocean water and begin targeting continental command nodes within four minutes. We have to breach the interior manually. We have to shut down the central nexus from inside."

Suddenly, the bridge's main forward display flickered violently. The navigation radar was replaced by a live optical feed broadcasting directly from a high-altitude drone hovering above them in the storm clouds.

On the screen, a figure sat in an ornate high-backed chair before a wall of glowing mainframe towers. Lady Eleanor Vance looked nothing like a dead woman. Her silver hair was pinned back with severe aristocratic elegance, her high cheekbones and razor-sharp gaze the exact mirror image of Claire’s. She was clad in a tailored charcoal dress uniform stripped of national insignia, a single diamond-encrusted brooch resting at her collar.

"You are punctuality personified, Dante," Eleanor’s voice crackled through the bridge speakers, calm and unimpressed by the raging gale outside. "I expected nothing less from the Lion of Moretti. But bringing an escort submarine into my territorial waters was terribly predictable."

Claire stepped directly before the camera sensor mounted above the console. "Mother."

Eleanor’s cold gaze shifted toward Claire, a flicker of genuine, predatory appraisal flashing in her eyes. "Look at you, Claire. No longer scrubbing tables in low-rent diners to hide from my reach. You look like a Vance again. You look like the warrior I bred you to be."

"You didn't breed a warrior," Claire spat back, her hand dropping instinctively to the grip of her pistol. "You abandoned a daughter. And you will never touch Leo."

Eleanor smiled—a chilling, bloodless expression. "I did not abandon you, child. I preserved you. A bloodline as pure as ours cannot be wasted on petty syndicate wars or corrupt political senates. Your father was weak, but Dante Moretti’s blood has the raw iron needed to rule what comes next. Bring the boy to the lower dock. Come alone, both of you. If your submarine fires a single thruster, I will turn the eastern seaboard into glass before sunrise."

The screen snapped to static. Outside, the fog parted just enough to reveal the towering, sheer cliffs of the Citadel rising like an obsidian jagged tooth from the boiling waves.
