Chapter 28 - The Depths of San Lorenzo

The USS *Manta* descended into the black abyss of the San Lorenzo Trench, thousands of feet below the sunlight zone where the ocean pressure could crush a standard hull like a tin can.

Claire stood on the elevated command platform in the submarine's attack center, Dante standing silently at her right shoulder. The crew, hardened submariners who had never seen an outsider in their tactical bay, worked with disciplined silence, though every eye periodically darted toward the commanding presence of the Rear Admiral and the mafia lord beside her.

"Target bearing zero-four-five, distance two thousand yards," the sonar technician whispered into his headset. "Mother of God... Admiral, look at the displacement signature."

On the main sonar monitor, a monstrous silhouette materialized from the acoustic returns. It was a massive, subterranean dry dock carved directly into the basalt wall of an underwater volcanic trench—a secret facility powered by deep geothermal vents, hidden beneath international waters for over three decades.

Docked inside the cavernous underwater pen was an immense vessel: an *Ohio*-class submarine, completely stripped of American identifiers, painted in matte sonar-absorbent black, with auxiliary torpedo bays mounted along its flanks.

"The *Leviathan*," Dante whispered, his knuckles tightening against the rail. "Thomas Vance told me about it before he died. Julian and Sterling built it with black-budget money redirected from decommissioned scrap programs. A phantom missile cruiser with no flag, answerable to no government, capable of launching a first-strike retaliatory volley without attribution."

"They don't just want to launch it," Claire realized, her tactical mind racing through the terrifying geometry of the plot. "They’re going to stage an unprovoked strike against an allied port, blame it on a rogue state, and trigger a global naval conflict that will funnel trillions into their defense syndicate."

"Admiral!" Ross called out. "The facility’s automated perimeter defense just activated! Supercavitating torpedoes in the water! Two fish, bearing zero-four-zero!"

"Emergency dive!" Claire snapped without a moment’s hesitation. "Deploy acoustic countermeasures! Angle downward forty degrees, take us into the thermal layer behind that basalt spire!"

The *Manta* groaned violently as the helm answered her command, throwing everyone to the deck as the submarine plunged into the freezing dark.
