Chapter 31 - The Submerged Pulse

The catastrophic groan of three thousand tons of pressurized titanium echoed through the subterranean cavern like the death rattle of a leviathan.
Claire did not blink. Her vision narrowed to the glowing amber terminal screen and the crimson flashing error message: **SECONDARY BIOMETRIC VERIFICATION REQUIRED: LIVING INFANT PULSE.**
"Claire! Move!" Dante’s voice tore through the deafening roar of automatic gunfire.
A hail of high-caliber armor-piercing rounds chewed into the bulkhead inches above Claire’s tactical helmet, showering her Kevlar vest with molten concrete and sparks. Dante was already moving—not taking cover, but advancing. The bespoke Italian wool of his charcoal jacket was soaked in crimson down his left arm, yet his right hand held a customized .45 caliber 1911 with terrifying steadiness. He fired three rapid, rhythmic shots into the elevated catwalk. A syndicate sniper tumbled over the steel railing, crashing into the churning foam below.
"The umbilical line is shearing!" Claire shouted into her throat mic, her fingers flying across the terminal's mechanical override keys. "The signal relay between this console and the *Leviathan* is routed through the main gantry cable! If that submarine clears the dry dock before I sync Leo’s pulse, the automated launch sequence locks out permanently!"
Through her tactical earpiece, the audio feed from the nursery chamber inside the submarine crackled. Little Leo was screaming—a frantic, terrified wail that pierced directly through Claire’s military composure and shattered Dante’s cold mafia detachment. Every decibel of that cry was an agonizing tether.
"Hold the terminal," Dante commanded, his voice dropping into an octave of lethal authority that brooked no argument. "Keep the data bridge open. I’m getting you that signal."
"Dante, no! The gantry is collapsing!"
Dante didn’t look back. Dropping his empty magazine and slamming a fresh clip into the receiver with a sharp, metallic snap, he sprinted directly toward the swaying pressurized boarding tube. The massive umbilical bridge, four feet in diameter and lined with hydraulic conduits, groaned under violent tension as the colossal black hull of the *Leviathan* continued its inexorable slide toward the deep-sea trench.
Above them in the armored observation bunker, Sterling slammed his fist against the reinforced glass. "Sever the line!" Sterling’s voice boomed over the facility’s emergency PA system. "Cut the umbilical! Let the water take them all!"
Two mercenary engineers ignited thermite cutting torches along the gantry’s locking collars. Blinding white flame erupted, eating through steel tendons.
Dante leapt across a two-meter gap of boiling black water, catching the maintenance ladder of the umbilical by a single gloved hand. The shock wrenched his wounded shoulder, tearing torn flesh open, but Dante didn't even grunt. His face was a mask of carved granite, fueled by the primal fury of a father whose only legacy was drifting into the dark.
From his tactical harness, Dante ripped an emergency RF-repeater spike. He drove the steel rod directly into the primary sensor conduit running along the umbilical's spine.
"Claire!" Dante roared over the comms, his blood dripping into the foaming abyss below. "Patching infant monitor feed into auxiliary channel six! Grab the damn pulse now!"
At the terminal, Claire slammed the comm-link bypass into the auxiliary port. The monitor flickered. The erratic, rapid waveform of Leo's rapid heartbeat spiked across the green grid.
*Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*
The terminal chimed with an eerie, harmonic chime: **INFANT CARDIAC FREQUENCY DETECTED. MATCHING LINEAGE: MORETTI-ELLISON HYBRID AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED.**
**ABORT PROTOCOL STAGE 1 ACCEPTED. ENTER FINAL PHYSICAL DISARM KEY ON PRIMARY LAUNCH CONSOLE ABOARD VESSEL.**
"It only half-worked!" Claire gasped, her eyes widening as the screen refreshed. "The abort sequence won't transmit remotely! The final physical kill-switch is on the submarine's bridge!"
At that exact fraction of a second, the thermite burned through the final hydraulic coupling. With a sound like an artillery shell detonating, the main umbilical sheared in two. The severed steel cable whipped across the cavern, obliterating the catwalk.

And Dante Moretti was thrown into the churning black abyss of the open sea trench as the *Leviathan* vanished beneath the waves.
