Chapter 7 - Bloodlines and Blackmail

At 3:00 AM, the Mercer Tower in Midtown Manhattan was supposed to be dark. Instead, the top three floors were lit up like an airfield, buzzing with high-frequency financial traders executing illegal cross-border block sales across Tokyo and London.

Inside his corner office, Donald Mercer—a bloated, seventy-year-old shark with a snow-white mane and the dead eyes of an executioner—poured two fingers of bourbon for Eleanor Sterling.

Eleanor was sitting on his leather sofa, a silk scarf wrapped around her neck to hide the bruises on her jaw, her fingers twitching as she watched the Asian trading monitors flash red.

“The Hong Kong exchange just absorbed four million shares,” Mercer said, his voice a gravelly rumble. “By the time New York wakes up, Sterling Global will be trading at eighteen dollars a share. Julian’s margin call will execute automatically at 9:31 AM. The bank will seize his fifty-one percent controlling stake, and my fund will scoop it up for pennies on the dollar.”

Eleanor took a trembling sip of bourbon. The alcohol stung her split lip, sending a sharp jolt of pain through her skull, but she welcomed it. The pain kept her focused.

“Good,” Eleanor hissed, her voice dripping with poison. “I want him begging in the street. I want to see that little bitch wearing rags before the FBI drags me away. If I can't have the Sterling name, no one will.”

“You’re a vicious woman, Eleanor,” Mercer smiled coldly. “I always admired that about you. Even after you framed Vance, you never lost your nerve.”

“Don’t speak Arthur Vance’s name in front of me,” Eleanor snapped. “He was an employee. An obstacle to be removed.”

“An obstacle that’s about to put you in federal prison for twenty-five years,” a voice boomed from the doorway.

Mercer spun around, his hand instinctively dropping toward the silent alarm button under his mahogany desk.

The office doors had been silently unlocked from the outside. Julian and Clara walked in, flanked by two senior forensic investigators from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and none other than the Deputy Chief of the New York Police Department.

Eleanor jumped up from the sofa, her glass shattering against the hardwood floor. “How did you get in here?! Security!”

“Your private guards took one look at FINRA’s federal search warrant and decided they didn't want to be accessories to corporate treason, Donald,” Julian said calmly, ignoring his mother completely as he locked eyes with Mercer.

Donald Mercer’s face went gray. “Julian... this is private business. You have no legal standing to enter this office.”

“Actually, he has every legal standing,” Clara stepped forward, dropping a thick, blue-stamped folder onto Mercer’s desk. “That is an emergency freeze order issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Every short-sale trade your team executed in Tokyo over the last three hours has been flagged as illegal market manipulation based on stolen insider credentials.”

Mercer sneered, trying to maintain his bravado. “Stolen credentials? Eleanor Sterling is a governing trustee of the company! She has the legal right to liquidate her family assets!”

“She did,” Julian said, his voice vibrating with absolute authority. “Until 1:15 AM, when the board of directors held an emergency midnight quorum via secure link. Harold Finch presided. Eleanor was unanimously stripped of all executive authority, her shares were placed into corporate escrow, and I was re-confirmed as sole managing director.”

Julian took two slow steps toward Mercer, leaning down until his eyes were level with the aging billionaire’s.

“And that’s not your biggest problem, Donald. Look at page fourteen of that folder.”

Mercer hesitated, his trembling fingers opening the blue binder. As his eyes scanned the highlighted routing numbers, a bead of cold sweat rolled down his temple.

“That’s Arthur Vance’s private audit from 2004,” Clara said, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. “It details the twelve million dollars in illicit kickbacks Eleanor funneled directly into your shell accounts in the Bahamas to secure your silence during my father’s trial. You didn't just help her short our stock tonight, Donald. You were an active co-conspirator in the grand larceny and wrongful death of a federal witness.”

Mercer’s knees gave out. He collapsed back into his leather chair, the glass of bourbon in his hand shaking so violently the liquid splashed over his gold Rolex.

Eleanor stood frozen, watching the ultimate power play crumble in real-time. She looked at Mercer, then at Julian, then at Clara.

“You...” Eleanor breathed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, manic whisper. “You ruined everything. My father built this company! My family owned this city before your ancestors even set foot on this continent!”

She lunged forward, her manicured fingers clawing through the air, heading straight for Clara’s throat. “I WILL KILL YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS!”

Before Julian could move, the NYPD Deputy Chief and two officers stepped in, grabbing Eleanor by the arms, twisting them behind her back, and slamming her face-down onto the glass conference table.
