Chapter 39 - The Rebirth of the Altar

Three months later, the spring sunshine poured through the stained-glass windows of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The scars from the violent winter had finally begun to fade, replaced by fragrant bouquets of white lilies and fresh gardenias.

There were no five hundred elite socialites filling the grand mahogany pews.

There were no paparazzi helicopters hovering over the stone spires, and no high-society gossip columnists judging the bride’s pedigree.

Inside the vast, sacred hall stood only Daniel, Emily, and Marcus serving as the best man.

Near the back pew, dressed in a humble gray wool coat, sat Victoria Van Allen.

She had been released on strict house arrest after turning state's witness against Arthur, her former arrogance humbled into quiet, weeping gratitude.

Daniel stood at the foot of the altar, looking sharp and undeniably handsome in an immaculate charcoal tuxedo.

The pipe organ swelled with a gentle, joyful melody as the heavy oak doors opened at the rear of the cathedral.

Emily stepped into the aisle, radiating an ethereal beauty that took Daniel’s breath away completely.

She wore a simple, flowing silk gown that trailed gracefully over the white marble floor, free of heavy diamonds or aristocratic pretensions.

Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, framing a glowing face filled with radiant joy.

Daniel walked halfway down the aisle to meet her, refusing to wait at the altar a single second longer.

He took her small, warm hands into his own, raising them gently to his lips.

"You are the most breathtaking thing I have ever seen," Daniel whispered, his eyes shining with unvarnished devotion.

"And you are my entire world," Emily smiled back, tears of happiness misting in her eyes.

The elderly priest smiled down at them from the pulpit, opening the leather-bound prayer book with a gentle nod.

"We are gathered here today to unite Daniel and Emily in a bond that no force, no wealth, and no malice can tear asunder," the priest spoke.

When Daniel placed the simple platinum wedding band on Emily’s finger, his hands were rock steady.

"With this ring, I promise to protect you, cherish you, and choose you over every empire on earth," Daniel vowed.

Emily slid a matching band onto his finger, looking directly into his soul.

"With this ring, I give you my heart, my loyalty, and my forever," she answered softly.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared. "You may kiss your bride."

Daniel gathered Emily into his arms, dipping her slightly as their lips met in a passionate, sealing embrace that echoed through the vast sanctuary.

For the first time in his life, Daniel Van Allen was truly free.
