Chapter 5 - The Honeymoon That Never Was

The silence inside the Sterling boardroom was so profound that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a jet engine.
Eleanor stared at the silver flash drive as if it were a venomous snake coiled on the glass table. For the first time in her sixty years of dominance, a tiny, almost imperceptible twitch betrayed the corner of her left eye.
“You’re bluffing,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a dry, hollow rattle. “Arthur Vance was a sniveling coward. He didn't have the brains to set up a digital fail-safe. This is a fabricated piece of malware designed to stall this board.”
“Play it,” Julian told Agent Vance.
The FBI agent hesitated, looking between the bleeding matriarch and the grim-faced heir. Recognizing the legal weight of the situation, he reached out, picked up the drive, and plugged it directly into his department-issued laptop. He routed the audio through the boardroom’s ceiling speakers.
A static-heavy hiss filled the room.
Then, a man’s voice—tired, shaking, yet undeniably clear—echoed through the chamber.
*“If anyone is listening to this, it means Richard and Eleanor Sterling have successfully framed me. It is 11:30 PM on October 14th. I am sitting in my office at Sterling Tower. Twenty minutes ago, Eleanor personally entered my office and handed me three options: Sign off on the ninety-million-dollar Hong Kong transfer through the BVI shell company, take a bullet in the basement parking garage, or watch my wife and daughter disappear. I have made copies of the offshore ledger, signed in Eleanor’s own hand, and hidden them in the vault at Schweizerische Bank, account number 8-8-4-Victor. May God forgive me for what I have to do to protect Clara...”*
A click. Then silence.
The twelve board members looked at Eleanor with expressions ranging from pure shock to unvarnished revulsion.
Harold Finch slowly pushed his chair back and stood up. “Eleanor... tell me that isn't your handwriting on those ledger authorizations.”
Eleanor didn't look at Harold. She didn't look at the board. Her wild, bloodshot eyes were fixed entirely on Clara.
“You little viper,” Eleanor snarled, her aristocratic facade shattering into raw, feral malice. “You think a twenty-year-old tape of a dead criminal saves you? You think this board cares about twenty-year-old accounting tricks?! We built this city! We own the judges! We own the District Attorney!”
She turned violently toward Agent Vance. “Arrest them! Arrest both of them! Julian assaulted me! There are five hundred witnesses! There is video! Put him in cuffs right now!”
Agent Vance closed his laptop slowly. He stood up, but he didn't draw his cuffs. He looked at Eleanor with a face carved from stone.
“Mrs. Sterling,” Vance said quietly. “Domestic dispute allegations fall under the jurisdiction of the NYPD, not the FBI. However, the systematic framing and wrongful imprisonment leading to the wrongful death of a federal witness involving ninety million dollars of wire fraud? That is Southern District jurisdiction. And right now, ma'am... you are the target of an active federal inquiry.”
Eleanor took a step back, her chest heaving, the emerald suit suddenly looking like a clown’s costume under the harsh lights. “You’re making a catastrophic mistake, Agent. My personal attorney is the former Attorney General. One phone call and you’ll be directing traffic in North Dakota!”
“Try making that call,” Julian stepped into her path, his towering frame blocking her exit.
He looked down at his mother, the woman who had raised him on an exclusive diet of paranoia, cold ambition, and emotional cruelty. The guilt that had haunted him for striking her at the altar vanished completely.
“You’re finished, Eleanor,” Julian said, his voice flat. “The board meeting is adjourned. As of this second, I am executing an emergency freeze on all family accounts. You have two hours to vacate the Sterling family townhouse on 72nd Street before the locks are changed.”
Eleanor laughed. It was a terrifying, hysterical sound that rose into a screech.
“You think you’ve won, Julian?!” she screamed, her fingernails digging into the palms of her hands until her own blood stained her rings. “You think this girl loves you?! She played you like a cheap fiddle! Every kiss she gave you was paid for by her hatred for me! Look at her! She doesn't see a husband when she looks at you—she sees the son of the monsters who killed her father!”
Clara stepped up beside Julian. She didn't look away from Eleanor’s wild glare. Without hesitation, Clara reached out and laced her fingers firmly through Julian’s bruised right hand.
“Whatever sins Julian’s parents committed,” Clara said with lethal calmness, “he paid for them when he broke your jaw to protect me. You are alone, Eleanor. And you will die alone in a federal cell.”
Eleanor stared at their intertwined hands. A vein in her forehead throbbed with such violence it looked as though it might burst through the skin.
May you like
Without another word, Eleanor grabbed her designer crocodile clutch, shoved past Agent Vance, and stormed out of the boardroom. The heavy glass doors swung shut behind her, leaving Julian and Clara standing together amidst the wreckage of an empire.
