Chapter 27 - The Awakening

The soft, rhythmic beep of the cardiac monitor was the only sound inside the private ICU recovery room.
Daniel sat in the armchair beside the bed, his head resting gently against the edge of the mattress, his fingers entwined with Emily’s limp hand.
The door clicked shut as the police guard took his post outside in the hallway.
A faint groan broke the silence.
Daniel sat up instantly, his heart hammering against his ribs.
Emily’s eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly turned her head toward him, her face as white as the hospital linens.
"Daniel...?" she whispered, her cracked voice barely audible over the hum of the machines.
"I'm here, my love," Daniel said, leaping to his feet and kissing her pale fingers. "I'm right here. You're safe. You're in the hospital in Aspen."
Emily’s eyes widened with immediate panic, her free hand instantly moving down to her stomach.
"The baby... Daniel, please tell me—"
"The baby is fighting," Daniel interrupted tenderly, smoothing her hair back. "The heartbeat is steadying. The doctors gave you medication to reverse the poison. You're going to make it, Emily. Both of you."
Tears streamed down Emily's cheeks, washing away the dried blood near her temple.
"She gave me the water, Daniel," Emily sobbed softly, the memory sending shivers through her frail body. "She smiled at me and poured it from the crystal carafe herself."
"I know," Daniel murmured, anger flaring deep in his chest. "We found the toxin. The police have the evidence."
Emily grabbed his forearm, pulling him closer with surprising strength.
"That's not all," Emily whispered, her voice trembling with raw horror. "Right before you walked out of the cabin bathroom... she leaned down to my ear."
Daniel stiffened. "What did she say, Emily?"
"She whispered... 'You think you're the first pregnant parasite I've erased from this family? Ask Daniel what happened to his father's mistress twenty years ago.'"
May you like
Daniel stopped breathing.
The air in the room felt suddenly arctic.
