Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Ledger

Midnight descended over Manhattan like a shroud of black velvet.

While the city slept, the servers inside the Sterling Global headquarters hummed with feverish activity. Julian had hired a private forensic cyber-team to scour every transaction linked to his mother’s private accounts over the last two decades.

In the penthouse above, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Julian sat on the leather sofa, a tumbler of water in his hand, watching Clara through the glass doors of his private office. She was on the phone with her legal team in Seattle, verifying the transfer of the Swiss documents. Her posture was rigid, her jaw clenched, her eyes carrying a fatigue that went deeper than bone.

He still couldn't wrap his mind around the sheer magnitude of the deceit. Two years. Two years of sharing meals, sharing secrets, sharing their bodies—all built on a foundation of historical vengeance. And yet, when Eleanor had dragged Clara across the marble altar, the protective instinct that had driven Julian to strike his mother had not come from logic. It had come from a feral, undeniable love.

Clara hung up the phone and walked out onto the terrace. Julian followed her, the cold night air hitting his face like a slap.

“The Swiss authorities verified the chain of custody,” Clara said, not turning around. She leaned against the glass railing, looking out over the flickering grid of Manhattan. “The original ledger has been released to the Department of Justice. Eleanor will be indicted before the markets open at 9:30 AM.”

“Congratulations,” Julian said quietly. “You got your justice.”

Clara turned around, her eyes glistening under the city lights. “You say that like you hate me.”

“I don’t hate you, Clara,” Julian ran a hand through his dark hair, his voice laced with exhaustion. “I’m terrified of you. I’m terrified of the fact that I looked at the woman who raised me, saw her hurting you, and wanted to tear her apart with my bare hands... while you were playing a game of chess three moves ahead of everyone in the room.”

Clara walked toward him, stopping mere inches from his chest. She reached up, gently touching the corner of his swollen knuckles. Julian didn’t pull away, but he didn't lean in either.

“Julian,” she whispered, her voice cracking with raw vulnerability. “When she attacked me at the altar, I wasn't thinking about the stock shares. I wasn't thinking about my father. I was terrified because I thought she had finally poisoned you against me. When you hit her... when you pulled me into your arms... that wasn't part of my plan. I never wanted you to carry the burden of striking your own blood.”

“She isn't my blood anymore,” Julian said, his jaw hardening. “A mother doesn't try to destroy her son’s soul just to maintain control over a pile of dirty money.”

Before Clara could reply, Julian’s private satellite phone rang. It was Marcus.

Julian hit speakerphone. “What is it, Marcus?”

*“Julian, we have a massive problem,”* Marcus’s voice was filled with static and panic. *“Eleanor never went to the 72nd Street townhouse.”*

Julian frowned. “Where is she? Did she try to board a private jet?”

*“No! We tracked her Maybach to Long Island. She met with Donald Mercer an hour ago.”*

Clara gasped. Donald Mercer was the head of the Mercer Syndicate—a ruthless private equity firm that specialized in hostile takeovers, corporate liquidations, and under-the-table political hits. Mercer had spent ten years trying to break into Sterling Global, but Julian’s father had always kept him locked out.

*“Julian,”* Marcus continued, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. *“Mercer just initiated an emergency overnight short-sale on Sterling Global stock through off-market Asian exchanges. They’re dumping forty percent of the company’s valuation before the opening bell. If the stock crashes below forty dollars at 9:30 AM, a margin call triggers on your personal trust shares. Eleanor is liquidating the entire company to bankrupt you!”*

Julian’s blood ran cold.

Eleanor wasn't trying to defend herself in court anymore. She knew she was going to prison. She was setting fire to the entire castle while she was still inside it, ensuring that Julian and Clara inherited nothing but ashes and debt.

“She’s going scorched earth,” Julian muttered, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “She wants to drag us down with her.”

“Not yet,” Clara said, her voice instantly snapping back into that cold, brilliant focus that made Julian’s heart race. She grabbed Julian’s arm, her hazel eyes ablaze. “Julian, the Swiss ledger doesn't just incriminate Eleanor. It contains the shadow accounts Donald Mercer used to fund his original takeover bids in 2004. Mercer isn't helping Eleanor out of loyalty—he’s helping her because she’s blackmailing him!”

Julian stared at her. “How do you know that?”

“Because my father kept the bank routing receipts,” Clara smiled, a grim, lethal smirk. “Eleanor thinks she’s using Mercer to burn us down. Let’s show Mercer what happens when you bet on a sinking ship.”
