Chapter 40 - The Serpent's Legacy

The evening penthouse overlooking Central Park was a sanctuary of peace and warm golden light.

Daniel leaned against the marble kitchen island, swirling a glass of sparkling water, watching Emily unpack groceries near the refrigerator.

She was humming a gentle tune, her cheeks rosy with a healthy, vibrant glow that made his heart swell with pride.

"Marcus called from the federal penitentiary," Daniel said, setting his glass onto the counter. "Arthur’s bail was denied permanently. He will stand trial next month with no possibility of parole."

Emily paused, turning around with a soft, mysterious smile playing at the corners of her lips.

"Let Arthur rot in the past, Daniel," she murmured, walking toward him and resting her hands on his chest. "We have something far more important to talk about."

"More important than fifty counts of federal racketeering?" Daniel teased, wrapping his arms around her waist.

Emily reached into the pocket of her oversized cashmere sweater and pulled out a small, velvet-wrapped object.

She pressed it into the palm of his hand.

Daniel unwrapped the velvet with furrowed brows, revealing a tiny white stick with two unmistakable pink parallel lines.

Daniel froze, his entire world narrowing down to those two bright crimson markers.

He looked up at Emily, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief and profound emotion.

"Are you... are we...?"

"You're going to be a father, Daniel," Emily whispered, bursting into joyful tears as she threw her arms around his neck.

Daniel lifted her off her feet, spinning her around the gleaming kitchen while laughing with unrestrained ecstasy.

He held her tight, pressing his face into the crook of her neck, feeling an overwhelming wave of purpose wash over his entire existence.

A sharp knock at the penthouse entrance broke the sacred moment.

"Marcus said he was delivering the final transfer deeds tonight," Daniel said, kissing Emily’s cheek tenderly. "Stay right here. I’ll get it."

Daniel walked down the long hardwood foyer, unlocking the reinforced double doors of the penthouse suite.

No one was standing in the corridor.

The private elevator sat closed and silent at the end of the hall.

Resting directly on the welcome mat was an ornate, antique wooden box inlaid with mother-of-pearl, tied with a black silk ribbon.

Frowning with sudden unease, Daniel knelt down and lifted the heavy box, bringing it inside and closing the door.

"What is that?" Emily asked from the kitchen, stepping into the hallway while wiping her hands on a towel.

"I don't know," Daniel replied, cutting the silk ribbon with a pocketknife.

He lifted the heavy wooden lid.

Inside the velvet-lined compartment sat a vintage silver baby rattle, blackened with age and tarnished at the edges.

Resting beneath the rattle was a handwritten note inscribed on heavy cream parchment in faded black ink:

*Congratulations on the heir, Daniel. Arthur was merely the footstool. You broke the wedding covenant, and the debt must now be paid in full. See you soon.*

Daniel’s blood turned to absolute ice as he recognized the handwriting.

It was the unmistakable, elegant cursive of his supposedly deceased father, Charles Van Allen.
