Chapter 80 - The Heartbeat of the Sovereign

The silence that followed was heavy, ancient, and absolute.
Maximilian Castiglione lay motionless against the cold granite flagstones, his empty, lifeless eyes staring up at the concrete ceiling of the vault he had built to rule the world.
Dante dropped to one knee, the shotgun clattering to the floor. His breathing was shallow, ragged, his skin turning a sickly, translucent gray as the blood loss finally overwhelmed his massive frame.
“Dante!” I dropped beside him, pulling Leo with me, pressing my hands against the soaked compress on his neck. “Stay with me! Look at me!”
Dante’s eyes fluttered, focusing on my face with agonizing effort. A faint, bloody smile touched his lips. “I kept... the vow, Laura. Plain wooden bench.”
“You’re going to keep it for forty more years!” I sobbed, tears spilling unchecked over my soot-stained cheeks. “Leo, hold Daddy’s hand! Don’t let him go!”
Leo grabbed Dante’s limp fingers, burying his face into Dante’s arm. “Daddy, wake up. Please wake up.”
A sharp, metallic chime echoed from the center of the obsidian table.
I froze.
The terminal—the one that was supposed to be completely wiped, the system that had just dissolved eighty-four billion dollars into global public escrow—flickered back to life.
A new screen appeared, but it wasn't the Castiglione heraldry.
It was a stark, brutal black interface bearing a single, pulsing gold symbol: an ouroboros—a serpent swallowing its own tail—encircling the initials *J.V.*
Julian Vance.
A digitized audio file began to play through the auxiliary comms, the warm, steady voice of my dead father filling the damp, silent vault.
*“If you are hearing this, Laura... then Maximilian has fallen, and you have executed the Jubilee protocol just as I prayed you would.”*
I gasped, my hand freezing over Dante’s bleeding throat. “Dad...?”
*“You believed Jubilee dissolved the assets,”* Julian’s voice continued, carrying a quiet, devastating sorrow. *“It did not. A trust of that magnitude cannot simply vanish into thin air. It was redirected. All of it. The real estate, the sovereign defense contracts, the private military charters... every single asset has been transferred into a blind, autonomous custodian foundation.”*
The screen flashed, displaying a legal decree that made the air turn to ice in my lungs.
*SOLE BENEFICIARY DESIGNATE: LEO JULIAN VANCE.*
*PRIMARY EXECUTOR: LAURA VANCE.*
*“You thought you were destroying the throne, my darling,”* Julian whispered through the speaker, his voice cracking with an unbearable, haunting regret. *“You didn't destroy it. You just inherited it. And the twelve Sovereign Custodians who guard the remaining vaults in New York, London, and Tokyo will not allow an outsider to hold the crown.”*
Before the audio could fade, the heavy blast doors at the top of the ramp groaned.
The security monitors outside the facility suddenly flared to life with red perimeter alarms.
On the screens, three black tactical gunships, bearing no national flags, descended through the Zurich blizzard, hovering directly above the extraction point. Hundreds of laser sights cut through the smoke, converging on the open shaft leading down to our vault.
And from Dante’s pocket, his burner phone began to ring.
I pulled it out with trembling, bloody fingers and answered.
A woman’s voice, cultured, icy, and dripping with venom, echoed through the receiver:
*“Congratulations on your inheritance, Mrs. Vance. You have five minutes to secure the child before we breach the vault. The Sovereign Council would like to welcome our new Chairman.”*
Beside me, Dante’s eyes snapped wide open, his pulse fluttering erratically under my hand, his gaze locking onto mine with sheer, unadulterated dread.

The war hadn’t ended with the Founder’s death.
It had just crowned us the targets.
