Chapter 61 - The Bloodline Heir

The acrid stench of cordite and flashbang magnesium burned the lining of my throat as the world tilted violently on its axis. My ears shrieked with a high-pitched whine, but through the deafening ringing, Elena Castiglione’s words echoed with razor-sharp clarity: *“It’s time to meet your real family.”*
Dante did not hesitate. Despite the blood pouring from a shrapnel cut across his temple, despite the laser sights painting geometric death across his chest, he lunged forward with a primal, feral roar. His shoulder slammed into the lead operative, knocking the man’s tactical rifle off-axis just as three suppressed rounds chewed into the pine floorboards.
“Laura, run!” Dante screamed, his voice raw, ragged, stripped of all billionaire composure. He grappled with the soldier, driving his thumb into the operative’s eye socket with brutal, desperate efficiency. “Take Mateo and get to the lower tunnel!”
“How tragically predictable,” Elena murmured. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t even raise her voice. She simply flicked her gloved fingers.
A second mercenary struck Dante across the back of his neck with the butt of a carbine. Dante crumpled onto the shattered glass, his breath leaving him in a sickening wheeze. Before he could push himself up, heavy combat boots pinned his shoulders to the floor, and the cold steel of a suppressed barrel pressed hard behind his ear.
“Dante!” I shrieked, moving toward him, but two masked men seized my arms in iron grips.
“Don’t touch her, you fools,” Elena snapped, her cold eyes flashing with immediate venom toward her own men. “You are handling thirty billion dollars of sovereign equity. Bruise her skin, and I will have you fed to the bottom of the lake.”
The guards instantly eased their grip, though they did not release me. My heart hammered violently against my ribs like a trapped bird. In the adjoining room, the sound of a scuffle ended with a heavy thud, followed by Marcus groaning in pain. A mercenary emerged from the doorway, carrying Mateo wrapped in his blue fleece blanket.
The sight of my child in the arms of a masked killer shattered whatever paralyzed terror was holding me together. Pure, unadulterated mother’s fury surged through my veins.
“Give me my son!” I lunged, fighting against the guards with everything I had, clawing at their tactical vests, kicking blindly. “Give him to me, Elena, or I swear to God I will tear your throat out with my bare teeth!”
Elena watched me, an enigmatic, terrifying smile playing on her lips. She gestured slightly, and the soldier brought Mateo over, handing him directly into my shaking arms. The moment my boy’s warm, trembling body pressed against my chest, he buried his face in my neck, weeping softly.
“Mama... Mama...”
“I’m here, baby. Mommy’s got you,” I whispered, tears spilling over my cheeks, though my gaze never left Elena. “What do you want, Elena? What lie are you spinning now? Mateo is Dante’s son! That document is a lie!”
Elena stepped closer, the hem of her pristine coat brushing against the splintered wreckage of the cabin. She reached out with a manicured hand, tracing the line of my jaw with the edge of a black leather glove. I flinched away, but she only chuckled softly.
“You still don't understand, do you, Laura?” Elena said softly. “You think Dante is the prize. You think his empire, his hedge funds, his Chicago towers are what this war is about. How pathetically small-minded. Dante was never the sovereign heir. He was merely the custodian.”
She glanced down at Dante, who was struggling against the boot on his spine, his knuckles white, spitting blood onto the floorboards.
“He married you because he thought he could bury you,” Elena continued, her voice dropping to a hypnotic whisper. “Your mother didn’t die in a car crash thirty-two years ago in Geneva, Laura. She fled the Castiglione tribunal while carrying the legitimate direct bloodline of the northern families. You aren’t an orphan from the Midwest who got lucky with a wealthy investor. You are the sole surviving sovereign holder of the Castiglione trust. And that boy in your arms...” She smiled, cold as a tombstone. “...is the ultimate key. Dante discovered your bloodline six years ago. That is why he pursued you. That is why he engineered the clinic in Zurich. That is why he kept you in the dark.”
The world spun. My eyes darted to Dante, begging for denial.
“Don’t listen to her, Laura!” Dante coughed, blood bubbling on his lips. “It’s a lie! I didn’t know until Geneva! I swear on my life, I didn't know!”
“Silence him,” Elena said flatly.
The butt of the rifle descended again. Dante went limp, his eyes rolling back as darkness claimed him.
“Dante!” I screamed.
Elena turned her back to the devastation, walking toward the shattered doorway where the cold alpine wind blew snow into the room.

“Bring them,” Elena ordered without looking back. “The tribunal is waiting at Lake Como.”
