Chapter 51 - The Freefall of Giants

The concrete beneath our boots fractured with a deafening, bone-shattering roar. Smoke, sulfur, and pulverized drywall billowed into the blinding squall of the Chicago blizzard. The 80th-floor penthouse groaned like a dying leviathan, structural steel beams twisting under the immense heat of Castiglione’s shaped charges.
Across the abyss of shattered glass, Dante had Castiglione pinned against the twisted iron parapet. Hundreds of feet below them lay nothing but the black, frozen maw of Lake Michigan.
"Dante! Let him go! The floor is dropping!" I screamed, my voice raw against the howling gale. Marcus was already dragging Mateo backward toward the fire stairwell, his muscular frame acting as a human shield against the jagged hail of debris.
"Dad! Daddy!" Mateo sobbed, his small fingers digging desperately into Marcus’s ballistic vest.
Castiglione’s lips were peeled back over blood-stained teeth in a grotesque, triumphant sneer. "You chose a gutter bride and a bastard, Dante!" the old man wheezed, his gnarled hand clawing at Dante’s collar. "The dynasty ends with you!"
"The dynasty died the day you traded my mother’s life for market share," Dante snarled. His eyes burned with an animalistic fury I had never seen in all our five years of marriage.
With a deafening crack, the corner support pillar sheared off. The floor tilted sharply at a terrifying thirty-degree angle. Castiglione lost his grip, his designer coat tearing away as gravity seized him. He grabbed wildly for Dante’s neck, trying to drag his son over the edge into the endless void.
"No!" I lunged forward, throwing my body across the buckling marble, sliding through shards of glass and chemical dust. I snatched the strap of Dante’s tactical rig with both hands just as the floor beneath his boots collapsed into open air.
The jolt tore through my shoulders, white-hot agony shooting down my spine. Castiglione dangled beneath him, suspended over an eight-hundred-foot drop, anchored only by Dante’s wrist.
"Cut him loose, Dante!" I choked out, tears of strain freezing against my cheeks. "Look at me! Look at Mateo! You promised me a life, not a grave!"
Dante looked up into my eyes. In that suspended second amidst the fire and falling snow, the mask of the ruthless billionaire melted away, leaving only the boy who once held my hand on a rusted fire escape.
"Forgive me," Dante whispered.
He drew his combat blade and severed the strap Castiglione was clinging to.
The patriarch didn't scream. He plunged into the roaring whiteout like a broken marionette, swallowed instantly by the blizzard and the icy dark below.

With a final surge of adrenaline, Marcus reached down with one enormous arm, hauling both Dante and me over the threshold of the concrete stairwell just as the entire eastern wing of the penthouse fell into the night.
