Chapter 38 - The Sovereign Covenant

I flicked my eyes up to the rearview mirror.

Far back on the dark horizon of the snow-swept highway, four sets of twin amber headlights appeared, moving at impossible speeds. They weren't police cruisers. They were low-slung, heavily armored military interceptors, effortlessly closing the two-mile gap between us.

Above them, cutting through the swirling blizzard like a prehistoric bird of prey, a matte-black stealth helicopter flew low to the ground, its rotors whipping the falling snow into a blinding hurricane.

"They found the transponder," Dante cursed, coughing violently. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic cylinder—a hardened titanium biometric drive.

"What is that?" I demanded.

"The original Castiglione Covenant," Dante said, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "The truth Arthur hid from everyone. Castiglione isn't trying to recover the money, Brianna. The money was already spent thirty years ago to build private military bases across the world."

My breath hitched. "Then what do they want with Clara?"

"Clara’s DNA is the match," Dante said, his trembling fingers wrapping the cylinder into my palm. "The Castiglione bloodline has a rare genetic marker—a specific autoimmune signature. The offshore trusts that control their entire global network are held under a sixty-year biological dead-man switch. If a direct descendant doesn't verify their genetic presence every ten years, the entire syndicate infrastructure self-destructs. The current patriarch... my grandfather... is dying of bone marrow cancer."

The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying brutality.

"She isn't their vault," I whispered, cold terror washing over my spine. "She’s his replacement battery. He wants to harvest her."

"He wants her bone marrow and her legal identity," Dante gasped. "He will raise her as an empty puppet, keep her locked away, and drain her blood to keep his global cabal alive. You cannot let them take her, Brianna. Promise me. If it comes down to it... you let me draw them off, and you run."

"I am not leaving you!" I screamed.

A heavy, explosive impact rocked the rear of the Suburban.

The first interceptor had rammed our bumper, the kinetic force jolting Mateo forward against his seatbelt. Clara let out an ear-piercing scream as the Suburban skidded sideways across the ice, sliding toward the edge of an embankment overlooking the frozen, jagged expanse of the northern shoreline.
