Chapter 22 - Smoke, Ash, and the Descent into the Underbelly

We fell through ten feet of vertical steel service duct, crashing into the damp, reverberating silence of the sub-roof filtration plant. The smell of burning jet fuel and ozone lingered heavily in the air above, slowly being swallowed by the musty stench of stagnant water and cold concrete.
Dante hit the metal grate floor first, rolling onto his side to cushion the fall for Clara’s pod, which slid against a massive exhaust conduit. He didn’t get back up. He lay facedown, his breathing shallow, wet, and rattling in his throat.
I landed on my knees, my body curled tightly around Mateo. The boy let out a sharp wail, then fell silent, terrified by the dark and the trembling vibration of the building above us.
I scrambled across the grate to Dante, my trembling hands tearing open his ruined dress shirt. The bullet had exited through the front of his pectoral muscle, narrowly missing the subclavian artery, but the blood loss was catastrophic. I tore the lining from my designer trench coat, packing it into the entrance and exit wounds with all the force I could muster.
Dante flinched violently, his teeth grinding together until a thin line of red dribbled down his chin. “Lena…”
“Shut up,” I whispered, tears burning my eyes as I leaned over him. “Shut up and save your breath. Who are they, Dante? You recognized the voice on the comms. You knew that callsign.”
In the amber glow of the emergency backup lighting, Dante looked older than his thirty-four years. The polished billionaire who had betrayed me on our fifth anniversary, the cold corporate titan who had traded empires, was stripped down to a broken animal bleeding out in an industrial sewer.
“It’s not… a rival firm,” Dante whispered, his pupils dilating as he stared into the shadows of the catwalk above. “It’s the Syndicate. The Castiglione family… they aren’t just shareholders. They were my father’s masters. Vance Global wasn’t built on innovation, Lena. It was built as a laundering machine for the old European bloodlines.”
My blood ran colder than the Chicago wind. I looked back at Clara, who had stopped crying and was now staring at us through the glass pod, her hazel eyes reflecting the dim emergency bulbs.
“The genetic report,” I said, my voice trembling with an icy rage. “What did it mean? 50% non-paternal Vance lineage? Who is her father, Dante? Tell me before I leave you here to die!”
Dante reached out, his bloody fingers curling around my ankle with surprising strength. “She has no other father, Lena. She is mine. But she isn’t just mine. In 2018, when we couldn’t conceive… my father forced the clinic director in Geneva to use an uncatalogued donor ovum cell… fused with your biological matrix and an ancient, engineered sequence. Clara carries the pure, unaltered genetic sovereign key to the Castiglione vault in Zurich—a vault holding six hundred billion in untraceable pre-war bearer bonds.”
I pulled back, recoiling in sheer horror. “You let them turn our daughter into an encrypted bank vault?”
“I didn’t know until three months ago!” Dante hissed, coughing up a spatter of dark blood. “When Julianna brought me the files… she didn't come to seduce me. She came to warn me. Julianna was their handler, Lena… but she fell in love with the lie. She gave me the decryption keys to save Clara, and that’s why they executed her in my office!”

The sound of hydraulic cutters reverberated through the steel duct above us. Heavy boots struck the ceiling plates. They were descending.
