Chapter 17 - The Shadow Over Chicago

Three days later, the air inside the private terminal at Chicago O'Hare International Airport smelled of jet fuel, ozone, and cold rain.
We were not at the lakeside cottage anymore. That life had been ripped away, reduced to ash and yellow crime-scene tape. We were surrounded by twelve armed Aegis contractors in gray tactical suits, their weapons concealed beneath tailored overcoats. A private Gulfstream G650 stood on the tarmac, its turbine engines winding up with a deafening whine.
Mateo and Clara were strapped securely into dual rear-facing car seats inside an armored Cadillac Escalade parked directly beside the aircraft's boarding stairs. They were asleep, blissfully ignorant of the war that was being waged for their names.
Dante stood by the vehicle, dressed once more in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit. But he was not the man who had worn it five months ago. His left arm rested in a discreet black sling, his knuckles were split and scarred, and beneath the immaculate white collar of his shirt, a faint purple bruise wrapped around his throat.
"The federal marshals took Roman into custody two hours ago," Sienna said, stepping out of a trailing black sedan. Her arm was in a medical cast, her face pale. "The Zurich vault was breached by the Swiss financial authority. Roman's offshore holdings have been seized. He’s going away for thirty years, Dante. It’s over."
Dante didn't look at her. His gaze remained fixed on the grey Chicago skyline in the distance—the towering monolith of Vance Global Center rising into the low clouds like an obsidian tombstone.
"It’s not over," Dante said softly.
I walked up beside him, wrapping my fingers through his uninjured right hand. "Dante. Roman is in a federal holding cell. The board has already reinstated your shares. We can get on that plane. We can fly to New Zealand. We can buy a farm and never look at a boardroom again."
Dante looked down at me, bringing my knuckles to his lips and kissing them with reverent tenderness. "I would give you the world, Lena. But if I run now, another Roman will rise. Another rival will see my children’s trust fund as an easy target. The only way to keep Mateo and Clara safe is to show the world what happens when anyone touches what belongs to me."
"What are you going to do?" I asked, my heart clenching with familiar dread.
"I’m going to the emergency board meeting," Dante replied, his eyes turning to black ice. "I’m going to liquidate Vance Global."
Sienna gasped. "You’re what? Dante, Vance Global is worth four billion dollars! It employs twenty thousand people!"
May you like
"Then twenty thousand people will find new jobs under the subsidiary spinoffs," Dante snapped, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "I am dissolving the parent corporation. I am breaking the conglomerate into five independent non-profit trusts, with sixty percent of all liquidated capital moving directly into an untouchable pediatric medical endowment under Lena's sole name. No voting shares. No public stock. No crown left to fight over."
He looked at me, a faint, devastating smile touching his lips. "If there is no throne, Lena, no one can come for the king."
