Chapter 30 - The Sovereign Key

The heavy iron hook caught Arthur Vance across the shoulder, spinning the old man around and knocking the revolver from his hand.

Arthur screamed, falling across the primary control console, his blood smearing across the glowing digital readouts.

Dante tumbled through the shattered window, landing heavily on the glass-strewn deck floor. He didn't look at his father. He crawled, inch by agonizing inch, toward the terminal pedestal where the biometric interface pulsed with an eerie, rhythmic blue glow.

“Dante, don't!” Arthur shrieked from the floor, clutching his mangled shoulder. “If you purge the sequence, you destroy the Castiglione ledger! They will hunt you to the ends of the earth! There will be nowhere left to run! No bank, no country, no shadow!”

“They… can… have… the ledger,” Dante gasped, pulling himself up onto his knees before the console.

He looked back at me. His face was pale, his lips blue from the hypothermia setting into his veins, but his eyes were clearer than they had ever been in the five years I had known him.

“Put Clara’s hand on the scanner, Lena,” he commanded softly.

I stepped over the shattered glass, unlatching the top of Clara’s pod. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely lift her tiny, warm body. Clara looked up at me, her wide eyes blinking against the cold air, completely innocent of the war raging around her.

I held her tiny palm against the biometric sensor on the left side of the terminal.

A robotic chime resonated through the cabin:

*PRIMARY SOVEREIGN KEY DETECTED. CASTIGLIONE VAULT UNLOCKED. SIX HUNDRED BILLION ALLOCATED. AWAITING SECONDARY EXECUTIVE AUTHORIZATION.*

“Do it, Dante,” Arthur wept, crawling toward his son's legs. “Authorize it to my account! We can rule together! You are a Vance!”

“No,” Dante whispered, looking Arthur dead in the eyes. “I’m a father.”

Dante slammed his left hand onto the right-hand scanner.

The screen flashed from royal blue to a violent, blinding crimson.

*EXECUTIVE PURGE PROTOCOL INITIATED. NEURAL SCRAMBLE SEQUENCE ACTIVE. ERASING THREE CENTURIES OF LEDGER ASSETS IN 3... 2... 1...*

A high-frequency screech tore through the terminal. An electric arc leapt from the console directly into Dante’s chest, throwing him backward across the deck. His body convulsed violently as the blue electrical current danced across his skin, his head slamming hard against the metal bulkhead before he went completely, terrifyingly still.

On the console, the monitors flickered, then displayed one final, flashing message:

*GLOBAL LEDGER TERMINATED. TOTAL LOSS REPORTED. ASSET LOCATIONS COMPROMISED TO ALL SEVEN SYNDICATE FAMILIES.*

Arthur Vance fell back against the deck, staring at the blank screens in stunned, catatonic silence. “What have you done… what have you done…”

The radio console crackled to life.

It wasn't Julianna’s frequency. It wasn't Arthur’s mercenaries.

A deep, unfamiliar voice, speaking in flawless, cold Italian, boomed through the yacht’s emergency transponder:

*“Vance Global has burned the world’s wealth. Every port is closed. Every border is sealed. To the woman holding the Castiglione child: you have exactly forty-eight hours before the First Sovereign Tribunal lands on American soil. Run while your legs still carry you.”*

I held Clara against my chest, Mateo clinging to my coat, and dropped to my knees beside Dante’s motionless body.

I pressed two fingers against his neck.

Nothing.

Then, beneath the frost and the drying blood, a faint, erratic tremor beat against my fingertips.

May you like

He was still breathing.

Above us, the first wail of sirens began to rise from the downtown bridges, while out across the pitch-black waters of Lake Michigan, three massive naval silhouettes cut through the fog, their radar arrays locking onto our small, dying boat.
