Chapter 75 - The Surgeon’s Scalpel

High above the vault, deep within the subterranean granite belly of the Swiss Alps, Dante Vance was bleeding.

The air inside the abandoned Splügen rail tunnel was thick with sulfur, exhaust fumes, and the bitter taste of frozen dust. Dante dropped his battered snowmobile behind a barricade of twisted, century-old steel train chassis just as a burst of 30mm armor-piercing rounds chewed through the ice-slicked rock above his head.

The deafening chatter of the hunter drone’s rotary cannon echoed off the granite walls like thunder inside a metal drum.

Dante slid into the freezing slush, his back pressed against the cold steel of a ruined ore car. His breath came in ragged, white plumes. Blood soaked the left side of his tactical vest—shrapnel from the first missile strike had gouged a deep trench across his thigh, and his ribs burned with every heartbeat.

*06:45... 06:44... 06:43...*

The countdown timer strapped to his wrist was synced to the acoustic receiver beneath his collarbone. The skin over the scar was swollen, burning with a sickening, high-frequency vibration that set his inner ear ringing.

The Founder was narrowing the frequency band. The closer Dante got to the Swiss border line, the more unstable the charge became.

“Dante...” a rasping voice wheezed over his tactical earpiece. It wasn't Laura. It was Elena.

Dante reached up, tapping the comm unit, his hand slick with dark crimson. “Elena. Why the hell are you on this channel?”

“Because... because that ancient bastard left me to die in the Como basement,” Elena gasped, her voice hitched with agony. “He triggered the floodgates behind your wife’s helicopter. I managed to crawl out... into the secondary intake tunnel.”

“Give me a reason not to sever this link,” Dante grunted, pulling a field surgical kit from his tactical belt and laying out three titanium instruments onto an ammo crate.

“You can’t cross the frontier, Dante!” Elena cried, coughing violently. “The acoustic charge isn’t just a receiver—it’s an internal pressure trigger! If you break the perimeter line, the satellite link sends a localized microwave burst that boils the liquid inside the capsule. Your throat will rupture before your boot hits Swiss soil!”

“I know what it does,” Dante said calmly. He picked up a pressurized canister of medical ethyl chloride and a curved No. 11 surgical scalpel.

There was a dead silence on the line.

“You’re going to cut it out?” Elena’s voice was filled with sheer horror. “In the dark? In a collapsed tunnel? Dante, it’s wrapped around your left carotid! One millimeter of a slip and you will bleed out in twenty seconds!”

“Then I have nineteen seconds to finish the job,” Dante said through gritted teeth.

He leaned back against the rusted iron frame, pulled down the high collar of his combat shirt, and sprayed the numbing aerosol directly over the jagged scar beneath his collarbone. The chemical cold hit him like liquid nitrogen, turning his skin into stiff, sensationless rubber.

He didn't have mirrors. He didn't have an operating lamp.

He only had the memory of his father’s surgical diagrams, the digital schematics he had memorized in the secret vault beneath Lake Michigan, and the image of Laura holding their son.

“Laura is waiting for me in Zurich,” Dante whispered to the freezing darkness. “And I don't break promises to my wife.”

He took a long, slow breath, raised the scalpel, and drove the steel edge two centimeters deep into his own flesh.
