Chapter 69 - The Sovereign Fall

The water level was rising with terrifying speed. Cold, black currents were already churning through the grated floorboards beneath our feet, numbing our ankles. The deafening roar of the incoming lake water was so loud Dante had to scream to be heard.
“Marcus!” Dante bellowed into his tactical comms unit. “Where is the extraction boat?”
“Dante!” Marcus’s voice crackled through the static-choked earpiece. “The retaining wall is giving way! The lower canal is flooding! If you don't get out of the crypt in thirty seconds, the suction will drag everything into the lake’s subterranean trench!”
“Get Mateo to the maintenance shaft!” I yelled at Dante, fighting against the surging water that had already reached our knees.
“Not without you!” Dante roared back, his eyes wild. “We leave together or not at all!”
Elena stood at the entrance of her reinforced escape hatch, typing the final override code into the hydraulic panel. Once that door sealed, she would ascend to safety while the vault became our watery coffin.
“She has the cipher key!” I realized, remembering Teresa’s words. “If she seals that door, the emergency drainage will never activate!”
Before Dante could stop me, I handed Mateo into his arms.
“Hold him!” I shouted.
I sprinted through the knee-deep, freezing water toward the obsidian console.
“Laura, no!” Dante yelled, reaching for me, but the sheer force of the current rushing from the northern sluice gate knocked him back, forcing him to hold Mateo high above the rising flood.
Elena saw me coming. Her eyes flared with manic surprise. She pulled a spare revolver from her ankle holster, aiming it at my chest. “Die, then!”
She fired.
The bullet grazed my shoulder, tearing through the velvet gown and ripping a searing line of fire across my flesh. The pain was blinding, but the adrenaline pulsing through my system turned me into a creature of pure survival.
I didn't slow down. I launched myself forward, tackling Elena around the waist just as she stepped over the threshold of the escape hatch.
We crashed onto the hard steel floor inside the airlock. The revolver spun out of her grip, bouncing across the metal grating and falling through the floor into the rushing water below.
Elena shrieked, scratching at my eyes with her manicured nails, but I threw my forearm across her throat, pinning her to the deck.
“You tried to take my son!” I screamed into her face, my vision red with rage.
I reached for the silver fountain pen concealed against my thigh, unscrewing the heavy brass cap to expose the hardened steel stylus within. I drove the blunt steel end straight into the master override terminal beside the door.
Sparks exploded across the panel.
*“MANUAL OVERRIDE: SLICE GATES HALTED. MAIN DRAINAGE PUMPS ACTIVATED,”* the automated voice droned.
The incoming roar of water suddenly stuttered. The rising tide ceased, the massive turbine pumps beneath the floor groaning to life, violently pulling the black water back out toward the lake’s lower basins.
Elena gasped for air under my arm, her manicured facade entirely shattered. “You fool... you don't know what you've done... the syndicate... the Board...”
“I don’t give a damn about your syndicate,” I panted, blood dripping from my shoulder onto her face.
Heavy combat boots splashed into the airlock. Dante arrived, carrying Mateo tightly against his chest, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe, terror, and unyielding love.
“Laura,” Dante breathed, reaching out with his free hand, pulling me to my feet, his arm wrapping around my waist to steady me.
Mateo reached out, grabbing a fistful of my soaked hair, crying, “Mommy! Mommy!”
I buried my face in my son’s cheek, weeping tears of pure, desperate relief. We were alive. All three of us.
Elena lay on the steel floor, laughing weakly, her bloodied lips curling into a triumphant, psychotic sneer.
“You think this is over, Dante?” Elena coughed, struggling to prop herself up against the wall. “You think you won?”
Dante didn't even look at her. He kept his arm around me and Mateo. “It’s over, Elena. The Italian authorities and Interpol are swarming the estate grounds right now. Marcus opened every satellite channel. Your entire financial network has been broadcast to every intelligence agency in the world.”
“You idiot,” Elena hissed, pointing a trembling, accusing finger toward the master console. “I didn’t initiate that transfer... to hoard the money.”
Dante froze.
“What are you talking about?” Dante demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.
Elena’s laughter turned into a ragged, choking wheeze. “Who do you think leaked the Zurich clinic files to Laura? Who do you think orchestrated the affair rumors in your office five years ago? It wasn’t me, Dante. It was the Patriarch.”
The air inside the freezing chamber seemed to drop another twenty degrees.
Dante’s face went completely, utterly pale. A terror more profound than any he had shown during the entire siege washed over his features.
“He died ten years ago,” Dante whispered, his voice trembling. “I saw the body in Munich. I burned the ledger myself.”
May you like
“A body, yes,” Elena smiled, blood staining her teeth. “A dead double to fool the world. Did you really think the true Architect of the Castiglione empire would ever let his bloodline slip away?”
