Chapter 20 - The Bloodline's Secret

Dante threw the headset aside, vaulting into the interior of the helicopter with frantic, panicked speed. I scrambled in behind him, my heart hammering against my ribs so violently I could barely breathe.

Mateo was sleeping peacefully in his pod. Clara was awake, her large, dark eyes looking up at us without fear.

Dante gently lifted Clara’s tiny arm, his trembling fingers inspecting the soft, white medical identification band the private clinic had placed around her wrist hours ago.

Tucked neatly beneath the plastic band was a micro-thin strip of laminated paper, no larger than a postage stamp. It was stamped with a crimson seal—a double-headed raven holding an obsidian dagger.

The personal crest of the *Vance-Castiglione Syndicate*—the European banking dynasty that Dante’s father had supposedly eradicated thirty years ago to build his legitimate American empire.

Dante’s face went utterly, completely bloodless. In all the years I had known him—through boardroom coups, gunfights, and betrayal—I had never seen genuine, paralyzing terror in his eyes. Until this moment.

"Dante... what is that?" I pleaded, tears streaming down my face as I hovered over Clara. "What does that crest mean?"

He didn't speak. He turned the laminated strip over.

Printed across the back was a barcode linked to an encrypted genetic sequence, followed by three lines of printed text that shattered the reality of our world:

*Patient: Clara Vance.*

*Maternal Marker: Lena Vance (Match).*

*Paternal Marker: ANOMALY DETECTED. Subject shares 50% non-paternal Vance lineage.*

*Origin: Castiglione Frozen Embryo Vault #04 (Geneva, 2018).*

I stared at the paper, unable to comprehend the words. "What... what does this mean? She's our daughter! We conceived them together! We heard the two heartbeats on the ultrasound!"

Dante fell back against the helicopter seat, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. His hands were shaking violently as he looked down at Clara, then up at me, his eyes filled with a horror so profound it seemed bottomless.

"When you had your fertility treatments four years ago..." Dante choked out, his voice barely a whisper against the engine roar. "The private clinic in Switzerland... the one my father personally selected..."

"Dante, what did your father do?" I screamed over the howling wind outside.

Through the helicopter’s open cabin door, the black sky suddenly lit up.

Four unmarked, matte-black military helicopters rose soundlessly over the edge of the helipad, their heavy searchlights locking onto our aircraft in a blinding crossfire of light. The mechanical voice crackled through the cabin’s emergency loudspeaker, echoing off the rooftop concrete:

*“Thank you for liquidating the American assets, Dante. The syndicate has been waiting thirty years for Vance Global to be cleared of federal oversight. Step away from the girl. Mateo is yours. But Clara... Clara belongs to the bloodline that owns you.”*

Dante reached into his sling, his hand closing around the heavy black Glock, his body stepping between the open door and the crib where our daughter lay.

"Over my dead body," Dante roared into the blinding lights.

A single red laser dot settled directly onto Clara’s forehead.

May you like

And then, the radio whispered:

*“That can be arranged. Three... two...”*
