Chapter 45 - The Siren of Lake Shore Drive

At 4:00 AM, the city of Chicago was plunged into an engineered nightmare.

Every television screen, digital billboard on Lake Shore Drive, and emergency radio frequency across Cook County suddenly flashed to high-definition static, followed by the obsidian crest of the House of Castiglione.

Castiglione’s face appeared across thousands of towering LED displays lining Michigan Avenue. Bandaged, pale, but radiating an aura of lethal imperial authority, he sat behind a mahogany desk on the eightieth floor of his glass fortress.

*"Citizens of Chicago,"* the broadcast purred, piped through city civil defense speakers with crystalline clarity. *"A domestic terrorist faction has compromised vital civic infrastructure. Among them is Dante Ferraro, former CEO of Ferraro Global, and his fugitive accomplice, Brianna Miller. A bounty of fifty million dollars is hereby issued for the retrieval of the fugitive child, Clara Ferraro. Any civilian providing harbor will be classified as a hostile combatant. You have until dawn to surrender the child."*

Beneath the streets, in the cold light of our concrete sanctuary, Marcus slammed his palm onto the communications console. "The bastard is mobilizing the entire corrupt wing of the municipal police and his private security battalions. He’s locking down the bridges across the Chicago River."

"He's desperate," I said, stepping up beside my father, staring at the monitors displaying street cameras. Squad cars with dark-tinted windows were already sealing off the LaSalle Street bridge. "His cellular clock is running out. If he doesn't get Clara's marrow within twelve hours, his synthetic heart failure becomes irreversible."

"Which means he's consolidated all his assets in the Tower," Dante said, walking into the command center on his own feet. He was pale, but his stance was erect, held together by sheer willpower and battlefield narcotics. He was dressed in black tactical fatigues, checking the slide on a semi-automatic weapon. "The Tower is an impenetrable vault. Eight blast doors between the ground lobby and the penthouse. Autonomous sentry turrets on the express elevators."

"Every fortress has a sewer, Dante," I said, my voice dropping into a register of icy, absolute calm that startled even my father. "And Castiglione built that tower over the old Chicago freight tunnel network."

Marcus smiled—a cold, terrifying grin that mirrored my own. "My girl remembers the blueprints."
