Chapter 6 - Dante Confronts His Own Blindness And Deep Guilt

With Chloe finally drifting off into a peaceful, medically induced sleep, Dante retreated to his private underground study.

The underground room was lined with vintage firearms, encrypted communication monitors, and oak bookshelves filled with ledger books.

He poured himself a finger of neat bourbon, staring down into the amber liquid as the heavy burden of guilt crushed his chest.

“I was so busy expanding the shipping ports in Sicily and managing the syndicate’s acquisitions that I handed my home to a monster,” Dante muttered.

He opened his encrypted laptop, pulling up the background check file that his intelligence chief had originally compiled on Vanessa.

Every single red flag—her sudden social climbing, her mysterious debts, her fabricated family pedigree—had been glossed over or ignored.

Dante slammed his fist down onto the oak desk, cracking the mahogany surface right down the middle with brutal force.

“She played me like a fiddle, using my absence to torture an innocent child right under my own roof,” Dante cursed bitterly.

He knew that simply throwing Vanessa out onto the street wasn't enough punishment for someone who had systematically abused his only daughter.

The underworld had rules, and harming an Albasini family member carried a permanent death sentence, civil law be damned.
